Listening volunteer (Lewis)

If after successful selection, you decide to become a volunteer you will join a small team of Samaritans here in Stornoway. You will be given extensive specialist training and have the opportunity to expand and extend your skills and talents.

You will be expected to man the telephones during a shift, respond to e mails and texts, and give around 12 hours per month to meet the rota.

As well as Listening and support volunteers, we are looking volunteers to carry out other important tasks : treasurer, leaders/mentors, trainers, publicity officer, fundraisers, admin and IT support.

Organisation aims and objectives

Samaritans aim is to reduce the number of completed and attempted suicides. We provide a 24 hour, 7 days a week phoneline and email servive where there will always be a Samaritan to listen to anyone in a crisis, in a non-judgemental and sympathetic manner. We do not give advice.










4 hours per Week. Minimum Commitment: 2 Fortnight Thurs 11am - 2pm (face to face) Friday 10pm - 2am (telephone and e mail) Saturday 10pm - 2 am (telephone and e mail)


Experience required: You need to be - -sympathetic -non-judgemental -patient -a good listener -empathetic -without prejudices
Travel details: Cromwell Street beside HS1
Minimum age: 18


Expenses details: In exceptional circumstances travel expenses may be paid.
Training details: Preparation training of 20 hours is given. Ongoing training of 5 hours per annum. In situ volunteer support officer.
