Volunteer Befriender

  • VO43100

Volunteer Befrienders visit a family they are matched to every week and offer practical help and emotional support. Families may be experiencing difficulties due to a large number of children under 5, twins, post natal illness, depression, disability, isolation or many other issues. We ask volunteers to commit for about 2 years as we may well support a family for that length of time. Volunteers get an enormous amount out of belonging to Home-Start East Lothian! They gain worthwhile experience, feel a sense of purpose, are valued as part of a team, received expenses, regular support and supervision and ongoing training. They will have fun with a family and enjoy the social element of Home-Start as well. Many volunteers have included their volunteering experience in their CV's and this has been a stepping stone to further opportunities and employment.

Organisation aims and objectives

Home-Start East Lothian provides volunteer befrienders to support families under stress, who have at least one pre-school child. Families choose to have a volunteer, Home-Start recruits volunteers from all over East Lothian, and look for people who are committed, reliable, confidential, non-judgemental and most importantly have parenting skills. Potential volunteers undergo a preparation course, and after being matched with a family receive support and supervision from the co-ordinator.

2-3 hrs per week - we ask that a volunteer can commit to the scheme for about 2 years but we fully understand sometimes your own life gets in the way of this timescale.

Experience required: Ideally potential volunteers need to have some parenting experience but not all our volunteers are parents. We are looking for people with good listening skills, open minded, flexible, a sense of humour and understanding a families need when stressed
