Description

Working as part of a team of shoppers you will take one of our customer’s orders and go around the store gathering the required items. You will then pack the groceries into shop boxes and help put them through the checkout. Once all the orders are made up we pay the balance of the grocery bill and help the delivery people load the boxes onto the vans ready for delivery.

8.30 am til approx. 12 Noon Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Organisation aims and objectives

Our aim is to support older people to live independently at home. Our preventative services address the difficulty older people face getting their weekly grocery shopping, doing jobs around the house and the growing isolation that comes with failing health. We also aim to provide a wide range of supported volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and ability and these include shopper, driver, delivery assistant and office assistant.

Restrictions

Experience required: Interest in supporting older people, good reading skills, able to work as part of a team.
Travel details: At Supermarkets; Asda (Milton) and Tesco (South Road)
Minimum age: 16

Support

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: We reimburse public transport and mileage at £0.45 per mile paid by cheque. We also pay expenses by BACS
Training details: The new volunteers will be supported by an experienced shopper on the first few days. We offer ongoing support and training through our regular volunteer meetings.

Our trusted, reliable and friendly volunteers provide a vital weekly food shopping service which helps older people stay healthy and independent at home. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings our Volunteer Shoppers work locally in Galashiels. Shoppers are given pre-written shopping lists to work through and make up individual customer orders. When all shopping orders have been completed Shoppers assist with processing these through the checkout ready to be collected by one of our Volunteer Drivers. Shoppers normally dedicate a morning to this activity each week, starting around 8am and finishing by 12 midday. This social and active post will help keep you fit walking up and down all the supermarket aisles… not to mention what an expert you’ll become on the supermarket layouts and prices!
