We have great volunteering opportunities at Angus Independent Advocacy (AIA). We are looking for Angus residents to become Citizen Advocate's. An ideal Citizen Advocate will share our core purpose of supporting people to have their voices heard and uphold our Values. They must be aged 18+, are non- judgemental and have good communication and listening skills. All Citizen Advocates undergo a PVG check and must provide 2 references. We also ask that all new Citizen Advocates complete our preparation course. The purpose of this course is to give the person a better understanding of what Citizen Advocacy is and the principles and standards that underpin our work, focusing on; inclusion, confidentiality, non-discriminatory practice and adult protection.

Main purpose of the role:

  • To connect with people who may have a learning disability, mental ill health, acquired brain injury, have dementia or are an older person.
  • Independent advocacy is a 1:1 equal partnership between an advocacy partner and citizen advocate. The citizen advocate will bring the concerns of the partner into ordinary life and help the partner to connect with their local community.

A Development worker will support you until you are matched with an Advocacy partner. Our volunteering is so unique as once you are matched as an equal partnership there are no set hours, Its up to the two people how often they would like to chat or meet up.

Organisation aims and objectives

To provide accessible independent advocacy within Angus for adults who have: a mental health problem, a learning disability, dementia, an acquired brain injury or who are frail and elderly.

Frequency and commitment details

Variable, 1-2 hours per fortnight. Long term commitment

Restrictions

Experience required: Caring, good listener, good verbal skills - patience, Non Judgemental, belief in equality, understands confidentiality
Travel details: In local area as far as possible, all within Angus boundaries
Minimum age: 18

Support

Expenses details: Any out of pocket expenses are reimbursed. This can be discussed further during the recruitment process.

Short-Term Citizen Advocate

Do you have time through the week to support adults at key times of vulnerability and need? Do you have an interest or passion to speak out for vulnerable people and ensure their views are heard? Would you like to learn new skills, enjoy ongoing training and support? Short-term advocates come into contact with the health and social care system in Fife, as well as a variety of professionals and gain valuable experience of supporting a person. Advocacy support can involve attending formal or informal meetings, helping to make a complaint, contacting existing or new services or giving support with navigating through the benefits system. This project works with vulnerable people with learning disabilities or autism, mental ill-health, physical disabilities or chronic ill-health in the West Fife Community when there. is a more immediate issue to address and the partnership will usually end when this is resolved. Volunteers will be matched on a one-to-one basis to support local, vulnerable adults with issue-based advocacy. Often people who are problem solvers, enjoy Short-Term Advocacy.

Citizen Advocate Steering Group Volunteer

We are excited to have various volunteering opportunities within Angus Independent Advocacy including a role on the citizen advocacy steering group (CASG). The CASG is made up of people who have lived experience and its aim is to steer the citizen advocacy project into the next phase of its development. In citizen advocacy the citizen advocate (volunteer) is a person who can support another person (advocacy partner) who may be facing barriers to connect to their local community and have their voice heard. Being part of the steering group is “an opportunity to consider adding your experience and skills to help steer the project” ( Bill, steering group member ). Citizen Advocate (North East Fife Area)

Citizen Advocates have a unique opportunity to engage with a vulnerable adult in their community needing reliable, independent, help and support. CitizInclude Me recruits, trains, matches and supports local volunteers to become Citizen Advocates for adults aged 16-65 living in North East Fife who are vulnerable, isolated and at risk of being excluded from their communities. Citizen Advocates can support their Advocacy Partners by: -Helping them make informed choices -Helping them access services they are entitled to -Assisting them to voice their opinions and wishes -Helping them connect with their local community -Spending time with them doing things they both enjoy Advocacy partnerships are self-determining meaning the Advocate and Partner decide how to develop the relationship and achieve any mutually agreed goals and outcomes. This is a flexible opportunity as the Citizen Advocate and Advocacy Partner decide together on a mutually suitable time, day, frequency and place of meetingen Advocates help people to voice their views, make informed decisions and become less isolated.
