Streetsport provides young people across Aberdeen City with the opportunity to play sport for free in a fun and safe environment.

We run week night sessions year-round and are looking for volunteers to help at these sessions. Working as part of a team, you will assist with organising and participating in activities while building relationships with the young people that attend the sessions.

Volunteering with Streetsport is a fantastic opportunity to make a positive difference in the local communities. In addition to enhancing your CV / excellent experience for future employment, you will also have the opportunity to attend internal and external coaching and training courses.

Organisation aims and objectives

Denis Law Legacy Trust is a registered charity (SC 043169) that operates and delivers a number of free to access programmes and positive destination activities for young people in Aberdeen. Primarily through Streetsport, our flagship programme which is ran in partnership with Robert Gordon University, we aim to reduce instances of youth crime and anti-social behaviour; improve health and wellbeing; and encourage inclusivity through sport, physical activity and creative endeavour. Our activities currently engage over 18,500 annual participations across a range of age groups and include a variety of opportunities and programmes which contribute to healthier and safer local communities. Supporting and empowering young people to be confident, capable, independent and responsible citizens within their own communities.

Flexible times available to suit volunteers.

Restrictions

Experience required: An interest in sport and a willingness to motivate young people. We provide a variety of sports, not just football.
Travel details: Locations across Aberdeen. Currently we run sessions in the City Centre, Northfield, Torry, Garthdee and Woodside. We can usually provide support with travel to and from sessions if needed.
Minimum age: 14

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: We will reimburse any volunteer their public transport rate to and from their coaching venue on a monthly basis on production of completed paperwork attached with their public transport tickets.
Taster available: Yes
Training details: Excellent training and support provided to all volunteers. Induction provides an overview of Streetsport, DLLT and sessions. We run regular training sessions on topics requested by our volunteers and provide additional support as required. We also support volunteers working towards their Saltire Awards.

Volunteer Youth Expedition Leaders (Barra)

The Western Isles Duke of Edinburgh’s Award are looking for volunteer Youth Expedition Leaders. Not all expeditions are done on foot, although this tends to be logistically most simple so many are, but can also be by other forms of transport that don’t have a motor. Options include cycling, kayaking, sailing, horse-riding, coasteering, long boarding etc. If you have experience in any of these activities (or others you can think of) then we would be very happy to hear from you! Bronze expeditions are for 2 days and 1 night, Silver are 3 days and 2 night, and Gold are 4 days and 3 night. At Bronze, there is just 1 expedition to complete, but at Silver and Gold each group complete a ‘practice’ expedition at each level, and then if leaders are happy to go on to complete their ‘qualifying’ expedition, which is assessed. If expeditions are not your thing, you can help out with the ‘admin’ side of things supporting the young people with their ‘edofe’, logging on and uploading their evidence and ensuring that their profile is up to date and assessor reports are in. Training will be provided for any new volunteers. Commitment would be various hours between April – September for Expeditions and the admin role would be ad-hoc all year round.

Volunteer Royal Marines Cadets Instructor s

-Do you have enthusiasm and a passion for working with young people from a variety of backgrounds? -Would you like the opportunity to apply this passion in a meaningful role to launch young people for life, whilst also enhancing your skills, boosting your self-esteem and meeting new people? The Sea Cadets is the UK’s leading maritime charity and provides a head start in life for young people through nautical adventure and fun. Part of the Sea Cadets family, Royal Marines Cadets enjoy all the exciting activities on water that Sea Cadets offer, branching off into serious adventure training too. Specialising in orienteering, field craft and weapons handling makes Royal Marines Cadets unique. Our volunteers work, both directly with young people and behind the scenes, to help make a positive difference to teenagers who are often struggling in today’s world and their communities. Bridge of Don Royal Marines Cadets, based at Gordon Barracks, is currently looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join their team as Sea Cadet and Royal Marines Cadet Instructors. There are free training courses available for you to develop new skills, boost your CV and support you in this role. These tasks can also be divided between volunteers, so why not come along with a friend and share the experience? -About the Volunteer Instructor role: Whether you opt to be a uniformed leader, or wear your own clothes, you can be hands-on, teaching cadets. You'll run lessons, activities, games, projects and events that help cadets progress through The Cadet Experience, gaining qualifications and confidence as they go. Whatever your experience and skills, they could be utilised to help young people flourish – map reading, orienteering, fieldcraft, camping, adventure training, first aid, fitness / sports - there is no limit. Whatever your interest, you could bring it to Bridge of Don unit. You could also share your skills out on the water with the next generation, through the opportunity to teach water sports such as kayaking, sailing, powerboating, canoeing, rowing and windsurfing. If you don’t have any water sport qualifications, we’ll provide you with all the equipment, training and the opportunity to gain national qualifications with the Royal Yachting Association for example. All you need is lots of enthusiasm! -The tasks of an Instructor include but are not restricted to the following: • Promoting and safeguarding the welfare of Children and Young People for whom they are responsible. • Delivering instruction and training to adults and cadets. • Attending Parade Nights (Mondays 6.45-9.15pm) or being able to commit to a particular night each week or month. Hub/Coffee Shop support for LGBT+ Charity

We are looking for more amazing volunteers to join our Four Pillars team to help support the organisations daily operations. They would primarily help run our Coffee Shop and in turn support the LGBT+ Community who use this service. Volunteers would be an extension of the staff and asked to help meet and greet service users making any new visitors feel welcome and sharing information of any groups or events taking place which may be of interest to them. Many of our service users live alone, and have little family or friends to support them, so seeing a friendly face and being given the chance to have a cuppa and a chat for a few hours is invaluable to them. We have various groups which are held each evening, and these are peer lead, and run by our volunteers. These are closed sessions, so offer a safe, confidential environment for anyone attending. Volunteers support our staff to ensure the Coffee Shop and toilets are kept clean and tidy, throughout the day. They may also be asked support any events we run throughout the year. The largest event we run is Grampian Pride. Volunteers would be notified of any other one off opportunities by the Volunteer Coordinator as well as being invited to attend any of the internal or external training sessions which may take place. They can also participate in the brand new RAVE Scheme (Rainbow Award 4 Volunteer Excellence) which is an activity rewards system to recognise and encourage volunteer dedication and skill development within the organisation.
