Description

The Swan is an important part of Shetland's maritime heritage and a community asset, through which the Trust offers a wide range of sailing and volunteering opportunities.
Maintenance and refit work is ongoing November to March and includes:
Removing rig, sails, equipment from boat in Scalloway to store in Lerwick.
Organising and maintenance of equipment at stores in Lerwick - including cleaning, varnishing, painting and storage.
On board maintenance, at boat in Scalloway - includes cleaning, varnishing and painting as well as engineering maintenance on all on board systems.

Organisation aims and objectives

The Trust owns, maintains and operates The Swan, LK243, a traditional fishing boat which they have restored and operate as a sail training and charter vessel. The Trusts aims are to: >Encourage and facilitate interested parties and particularly young people to sail on the Swan. >Teach and keep alive the techniques of sailing and working a traditional sail Fifie. >Maintain the Swan as a viable charitable enterprise and make her available for viewing by the general public and visitors to Shetland.

Restrictions

Some activities require a level of physical fitness (not all). Minimum age limit for working on refit projects is for Health and Safety reasons / supervision.
Experience required: Conscientious attitude to work experience. No physical experience necessary for refit work as full training and supervision provided.
Travel details: On board the Swan, Scalloway, October - March; At the Swan store, Hay's Dock Lerwick: year round.
