Connecting Befriender

Rediscover Pathway supports adults who have experienced childhood abuse or neglect in care to make connections within their community. Connecting befrienders offer the opportunity for people to build safe, trusting relationships, to explore social activities and to focus on interests and skills rather than problems. Activities have included visiting art galleries, attending cooking classes, going to the gym, cinema visits and walking. Matches meet weekly or fortnightly for up to one year. We offer training, regular supervison and cover expenses.

Organisation aims and objectives

Health in Mind promotes positive mental health and wellbeing in Scotland. Our team of professional support staff and committed volunteers work in partnership to deliver a unique and wide ranging mix of individual and group support services in Edinburgh, Midlothian / East Lothian and the Borders. In particular it seeks : To provide and enable the provision of Mental Health Services. To provide information on and understanding of all aspects of mental health. To influence mental health policies and campaign for mental health resources. To achieve its aims and objectives through consultation with all interested parties.










Frequency and commitment details

1-2 hours weekly or fortnightly


Must be available for a minimum of 12 months
Experience required: Life experience and emotional resilience are required for this challenging and rewarding role. Volunteers should have good communication and listening skills and be empathetic and non judgemental. An awareness of activities and opportunities in Edinburgh and the Lothians would be advantageous.

Expenses details: Travel and activity costs, paid monthly
Taster details: You will be informed of training date options after receipt of application and interview.
Training details: Volunteers will be required to participate in six hour volunteer training, either one day or three evenings.
