Description

FDAMH is an independent mental health charity serving Falkirk and District, established in 1981. Our mission is to promote mental well being by providing a range of services and creating a welcoming environment where everyone feels able to get involved.

Our new Welcome Cafe Community aims to reduce social isolation and loneliness by encouraging people to interact when they are out and about in cafes, restaurants, etc. The idea is that when people go in to the cafe, if they are open to sharing a conversation with another person, they display a "Happy to Share" notice on their table. Then, others looking for a chat can join them. The hope is that people will chat to one another in an informal setting and perhaps share knowledge, ideas, information. For some people this may be the only human contact they will have that day, or week. For others, it might be that they are sociable people who are happy to share their time with others, recognising that even a little interaction with another person could be making someone's day! If people know that they can have some company in a cafe, this may be all they need to maintain their mental well being.

As a volunteer, we ask that you:

  • visit participating cafes, to ensure they have enough materials (leaflets, cards etc)
  • speak with staff and managers of participating venues to find out how the project is going
  • visit venues as a customer happy to share a table and find out first hand how it works
  • regularly feed back to the project lead with any comments/suggestions

To carry out this role, you will be:

  • reliable, and able to make a regular commitment of 2 hours a week for at least 6 months
  • able to work with minimum supervision
  • someone with good communication skills
  • cheery, helpful and chatty
  • able to attend meetings/relevant training if required
