We are seeking a volunteer to assist our Museum Manager in cataloguing and digitising our collection.

This will include object handling and research, photographing objects and uploading the data onto our digital database.

No prior experience is necessary as on site training will be given in a supportive environment.

We are looking for someone with enthusiasm, an interest in the past and a desire to learn new skills.

Ideally, they would volunteer at least one day a week as a minimum but this could be discussed with potential candidates.

Organisation aims and objectives

To promote the heritage of Eastriggs & Gretna through the Devils Porridge exhibition. To provide an educational experience for people of all ages. To inspire civic pride in our local communities.

Experience required: This position would suit undergraduate or postgraduate students seeking curatorial experience or work within the heritage sector, a person who wants to develop their skills for employment or a person seeking new skills or experiences with an interest in history
Travel details: The Devil's Porridge Museum, Annan Road, Eastriggs. Public transport: we are on the A79 bus route and we have parking spaces for cars.

Training details: New volunteers spend time with our Office Manager who shows them around the building, informs them of the basics of Health and Safety, runs through a new volunteer checklist with them and then shows them the volunteer handbook. Digitisation and collections volunteers work closely with the Museum Manager so they are never left unsupervised and will receive ongoing training on different tasks on a one to one basis as the need or opportunity arises. We have regular training opportunities such as Basic Food Handling, First Aid, De-fibralator training as well as in house activities such as the History of HM Factory Gretna and refresher training on 5 star Visit Scotland award expectations. No volunteer should ever work alone. There are always three volunteers on shift (including at least one more experienced volunteer) as well as a caterer and office staff so the volunteers are well supported.
