Volunteer Cook

Description

Meal Makers is a local neighbourhood food-sharing project that connects people with a love for cooking who are happy to share an extra portion of home cooked food with an older neighbour (or “diner”) who might be unable or lack the motivation to prepare a meal for themselves. Meals can be shared once a week, once a fortnight or every now and then, at times to suit. It is designed to be a flexible volunteering opportunity based on an everyday activity.

We do our best to match our volunteers with a like-minded neighbour (similar hobbies, interests and dietary requirements) so that both the cook and diner get the most from their Meal Makers experience; we do find that the volunteers benefit from participating just as much as the older person who receives the meal.

Once paired with a diner, cooks then arrange meals directly with them at a time that is convenient for both. The Meal Makers team will be in constant communication with the cooks and diners to ensure that both parties are enjoying the experience. We have regular check-in calls and are always on hand to provide support when necessary.

Restrictions

Experience required: There are no formal qualifications or skills required for this position, but we would expect volunteers to be friendly and helpful as an important part of the tole is the social aspect. We do not require our volunteers to have any professional cooking qualifications but we would hope that they are keen home-cooks.
Minimum age: 16

Support

Taster details: We require all our volunteers to take our short hygiene quiz to ensure the safety regarding storing and re-heating food. The role is an informal one and we would usually meet with volunteers via video call to have a chat and get to know one another a little better. There will be on-going support throughout the process from start to finish; volunteers can get in touch at any point and we also have a platform for our volunteers to learn from one another’s experiences.
