Tutor - Basic Computing

Description

You would be seeing client along with another tutor, with two clients per tutor. You will be given a Learning Plan: what they need to learn and suggested materials to use. You plan the session, work through it and write up a brief account of it. Homework is set and the next stage discussed with the student. You usually work for one hour per week.
Some tutors support a Community Learning Assistant. In this case, they give support to students, like a classroom assistant would do.

You receive 30 hours training over a 10 week period, but may start tutoring before the training if there is a student available.
Competent to at least standard grade in reading, writing and counting. (computing is optional)
Patient, Friendly, Methodical, Committed.

Organisation aims and objectives

We help adults to improve their reading, writing and counting skills. We often work on a one-to-one basis (one tutor to one student) but we also offer drop-in support throughout South Ayrshire. Our volunteer tutors are unpaid, but they receive sixteen weeks' training in Adult Learning and are supported in their work by local Literacy Development Workers.

Restrictions

Our clients are classed as "Adults" and may also be vulnerable. A degree of maturity is required in working with them.
Experience required: General competence in basic computing for everyday use. Patient, friendly, methodical and committed. Willing to explain simply and clearly, able to work at the students' pace.
Travel details: Our main base is The Learning Shop, John Pollock Centre, Ayr. However, tutoring can take place in libraries and community centers across South Ayrshire. at locations suitable to both tutor & student. Tutoring available in Ayr/Troon/Maybole/Girvan
Minimum age: 18

Support

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Mileage rate is 40p per mile. Payment is by cheque. Application for payment is monthly.
Training details: 10x3 hour sessions, usually Fridays 9.30am - 12.30pm. Two courses per year (September & February). Additional training offered at Tutor Forums. Continual support from Development Worker.
