Welcome to Compass; a project navigating healthy, sustainable living! *About the project: In September 2020, medical charity, Camphill Wellbeing Trust, took on the former Waldorf school site at Craigton Road to transform it into a centre demonstrating practical solutions for healthy, sustainable lifestyles. The mixed natural environment of Compass with its woodland and garden areas offers a wide range of opportunities including fruit, vegetable & flower growing, working in & enjoying the outdoors and observing & encouraging wildlife, including beekeeping. We use organic methods onsite and reuse/recycle as much as possible. Compass has 4 buildings onsite which we are sustainably refurbishing with the support of various funding bodies. This also gives opportunities for those with suitable skills to help with the project. *We need your help at Compass! Compass offers a wide range of volunteering activities to suit a all sorts of interests and skills. Activities are generally outdoors so will vary according to the weather and the season. *Volunteer support can often be related to: • Gardening: preparing ground, planting, potting up, watering, weeding, harvesting •Woodland care and monitoring: counting trees, pruning, collecting fallen branches, chipping wood, stacking logs • Painting: sheds, fencing, plant/tree markers and signage • Constructing: raised beds, compost bins, green pathways • Equipment maintenance: cleaning and storing handheld tools • Refurbishment: helping strip out buildings prior to refurbishment. We hope in the future to offer further indoor activities: for example, upcycling furniture, candle making, food processing. During your first session, one of our Compass team will go over Compass Health & Safety, explain more about the project and share the current tasks we need support with. We have lots of opportunities across our buildings and workshops. Some of the places and ventures we are looking for volunteers for are our wood workshop, textile workshop, upcycling, van driving, furniture deliveries and uplifts, clothes recycling, giving talks on personal interests, shop assistant, running workshops, running social groups and much more.

Restart Orkney receives a large amount of donated electrical items, which are required to be PAT tested and checked for safety before being sold on. Due to an increasing volume of donations we have a volunteering opportunity for someone to help PAT test these items. Key activities would include: • Visual inspection of electrical items • Plug in items to check on working condition • Simple remedial actions if required (ie. change plug or fuse) • Ensure internal electrical safety with our PAT testing machine • Documentation of test results • Cleaning items and preparing for sale What could a volunteer gain from the experience: The opportunity to meet new people in a busy environment. Learn new skills and update existing skills. A rewarding way to get involved in a local charity with environmental aims to encourage and increase re-use and recycling, whilst also enabling people on low incomes to access quality, low cost electrical goods. Pass on your skills to other volunteers and supported employees.

A wide range of opportunities are available and include: Fosterers – a spare room to care for a cat until a new home is found. All equipment and food etc provided. Home checkers – visiting prospective new cat owners. Fostering support and co ordination – helping fosterers and organising cat food distribution, equipment etc Equipment inventory – keeping an up to date list of all equipment and its location. Helpline – taking phone calls from the public. Food store coordinator – making sure fosterers have sufficient food of an appropriate type and caring for supplies. Kitten socialising – assisting fosterers to socialise young kittens to meeting different people and get used to them. TNR Trap, Neuter and Return – trapping feral cats, taking them to the vets to be neutered and then releasing them back to site. Involves learning about the colony and getting them used to being fed in a trap; arranging neutering with the vets; keeping the cats safe until fully recovered and able to rejoin the colony; arranging for kittens young enough to be socialised to be fostered. Transport – cats to vets etc; goods and equipment to where needed. Collecting and sorting donated goods. Storing donated goods, equipment and cat food. Fundraiser – to organise fundraising events. On line auctions – organise online auctions of donated goods. Stall helpers – assisting on stalls. Crafts – making crafts to sell. Grant applications – find and apply for appropriate grants and funding. Sunday tea staff – assisting at Sunday teas. Trustee – joining the trustees. Marketing. DIY – DIY skills to help maintain pens and equipment
