Business Mentor

  • VO74959

We are a new Scottish charity providing access to tailored business support and affordable business premises for young entrepreneurs in Dundee. We work with 18-30 year olds who are unemployed, underemployed, in low-wage or insecure employment, or otherwise facing barriers to employment.

Our Business Mentors are matched to a mentee based on their skills, experience and area of interest / business sector. We will endeavour to match mentors with mentees who are starting out in a similar field of work. You will both meet before we confirm the match, to ensure that there is a rapport between you both.

Your role will involve: Attending mentor training; Meeting with your mentee once a month; Work with the Enterprise Manager to support your mentee to access appropriate training or additional support, and Keep a log of your mentoring meetings and send this to the Enterprise Manager on a monthly basis

Organisation aims and objectives

Launch It Dundee is a new Scottish charity setting out to meet an evident need for affordable business premises and support for young Scottish entrepreneurs starting out on their business journey. We work with 18-30 year olds who are unemployed, underemployed or otherwise facing barriers to conventional employment, and provide them access to the space and support they need to start and grow their own businesses.

We would expect mentors to be available for a minimum of 2 hours per month (to meet with client and complete mentor logs), and ideally commit to at least 6 months of mentoring. This is to ensure consistency for our clients, as it can take time to build up trust and it is important that their mentor is not constantly changing.

Experience required: We are looking for mentors who: Can commit to volunteering for at least 2 hours per month; Have experience of setting up / running their own business; Have good business links within Dundee and/or surrounding areas; Are keen to work with young people and have an interest in supporting new businesses, and Can be sensitive when working with young people with additional needs.
Minimum age: 25

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: We would be happy to invite potential volunteers to come to our Dundee Enterprise Centre and meet with our staff and some clients, to help them to get a clearer idea of what their role might involve. Also, before matching is finalised, potential mentors have a chance to meet with their potential mentee, to ensure that they are happy with the match and feel able to support that individual client.
Training details: You will be given mentoring training as part of a group (1 full day / 2 half days, depending on availability), and will be able to access additional support from the Enterprise Manager. Mentors may also be signposted to additional, voluntary training opportunities during their time with us.
