Description

The BME (Black Minority and Ethnic) Homework club is an after school club for families who have English as a second language. Volunteers will be involved in planning, preparing and supervising activities for the children. They will also be working one to one with families and carers, to help them to support their children complete their homework and improve their English. Volunteers will help to prepare snacks and drinks and encourage attendees to engage with activities.

It takes place every Wednesday during term time from 3.30-4.30pm.

Bethany Christian Trust is a national charity whose mission is to relieve the suffering and meet the long term needs of homeless and vulnerable people in Scotland. We share a big vision – to work together towards the aim of Ending Homelessness in Scotland. We support people in a broad range of ways including: housing, education and employment, addiction recovery, emotional well-being, street outreach, community integration, offending reduction and social support

Restrictions

Experience required: Ideally, the volunteer should have experience in teaching or working with those with English as a second language. They should be friendly, encouraging and outgoing and able to support the staff in implementing health and safety procedures. Please note: this role is subject to a Disclosure check.

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Regular volunteers are entitled to claim up to £3.60 per day for travel expenses (£4.50 if multiple buses are required) and up to £3 per day for lunch expenses, providing that they volunteer for 4 hours or more on that day, and that they present their manager/supervisor with the valid receipts

Homework Club Volunteer

My Support Day is a charity based in South Lanarkshire that supports families affected by substance use. The Homework Club is a new project with the purpose of supporting such children and young children achieve more and grow in confidence with one-on-one and small group learning support. The Homework Club session will be followed by a whole family activity. The volunteer role is to support the children and young people with their learning, help to set up and put away before and after the club, and utilise your own skills and interests to help plan and run the activities. The atmosphere is very relaxed and informal, but reliability and enthusiasm are key to this role. The club will run every Thursday from 4-6:30pm in the Beacons in Blantyre so we are looking for people who can commit to 1.5-2.5 hours every week or fortnight. There will be lots of opportunities to work with partner organisations and access relevant training. This would be especially suited to someone with an interest in teaching, youth work, community/social work or a career in the third sector. A full induction will be provided when you start your role, and ongoing support including one-on-one meetings will be available to you. Community Engagement Facilitator (Angus)

Being a Community Facilitator is all about delivering a variety of lifesaving first aid skills in community engagement workshops and projects, within local communities, and primary and secondary schools. A lot of these projects involve talking about and demonstrating the basics of first aid to community groups that can include children, young people, and vulnerable adults. An example of events you could be delivering a first aid talk and demo to, are primary and secondary schools, small university groups, local community groups, charities, summer fairs, shopping centres. Some of the skills you could be teaching include how to provide CPR and apply a defib, different bandages and how to use them, and basic information on various health conditions. Not only that but all the training needed, is provided by us at no cost to you! A fantastic opportunity to help. All volunteers make a real difference and are greatly appreciated.
