Description

Research Ethics Committees consist of up to 18 members from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds. Our committees review health and social research, check that people are provided with the information they need to help them decide whether they wish to take part, and provide an opinion as to whether the research is ethical.

We currently have vacancies for members of the public who are not currently healthcare professionals, and who are interested in thinking about issues from the perspective of a potential research participant and would like to develop knowledge of research ethics. Members receive training in ethical review and have opportunities to debate challenging issues. Positions are voluntary but expenses are paid for.

Organisation aims and objectives

NHS Research Ethics Committees protect and promote the interests of patients and the public in health and social care research. The committees review applications from research teams across the UK, and the Scientific Officer provides support and guidance on request to all applicants for ethical review and additional support for researchers within Grampian, Highland, Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles Health Boards. The members of the committee are non-paid volunteers and include lay people who are not involved with clinical care or medical research and expert members with clinical or medical research expertise. The North of Scotland Research Ethics Service is governed by the UK wide Health Research Authority and the Chief Scientist Office in Scotland. We are supported by the Grampian, Highland, Orkney Shetland and Western Isles Health Boards.

Restrictions

Experience required: Committee members need to be committed to public service values of accountability, probity, openness and equality of opportunity and be able to consider the interests of participants in health or social care research.

A wide range of opportunities are available and include: Fosterers – a spare room to care for a cat until a new home is found. All equipment and food etc provided. Home checkers – visiting prospective new cat owners. Fostering support and co ordination – helping fosterers and organising cat food distribution, equipment etc Equipment inventory – keeping an up to date list of all equipment and its location. Helpline – taking phone calls from the public. Food store coordinator – making sure fosterers have sufficient food of an appropriate type and caring for supplies. Transport – cats to vets etc; goods and equipment to where needed. Collecting and sorting donated goods. Storing donated goods, equipment and cat food. Fundraiser – to organise fundraising events. On line auctions – organise online auctions of donated goods. Stall helpers – assisting on stalls. Crafts – making crafts to sell. Grant applications – find and apply for appropriate grants and funding. Sunday tea staff – assisting at Sunday teas. Trustee – joining the trustees. Marketing. DIY – DIY skills to help maintain pens and equipment

Executive Committee Members

Aberdeen Civic Society have great opportunities for people to help volunteering as Executive Committee Members. The Executive Committee work to advance the objectives of the Society which are: • To stimulate public interest in and care for the beauty, history and character of the city of Aberdeen and its surroundings. • To encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general amenity and historic interest. • To encourage high standards of architectural planning. • The Society pursues these aims by means of illustrated lectures, discussions, visits and walkabouts. An important feature of the Society's work is its Awards and Commendations Scheme. Through this, encouragement and recognition are given to those who have contributed to the amenity of the city by means of new buildings or the restoration and preservation of old buildings. The Society keeps itself informed on planning applications made to the City Council. It submits comments and suggestions, and lodges objections when proposals are considered detrimental to the city. Committee members are sought to help with the following activities: • to arrange the annual programme of talks • to organise the Society's social events- the annual Supper and Summer Outing • to research, discuss and respond to current Aberdeen City planning applications and to participate in public consultations on urban planning • to improve the Society's communication with the public through social and other media A fantastic opportunity to help with the preservation, development and improvement of features of general amenity and historic interest in Aberdeen. MANAGEMENT COMMITTE MEMBER

Management Committee Member Save By The Bell (SBTB) is a school-based project which aims to provide financial education to pupils and to complement financial inclusion initiatives within the city of Dundee. We aim to encourage children and young people to develop a regular savings habit which can be sustained during their adult life. We are currently looking for volunteers to serve on our Management Committee which oversees the business operations of SBTB - setting priorities in the use of staff and other resources. The management committee meets quarterly to review the latest financial results and address any queries or issues that have been raised. We are looking for individuals with an interest in the aims of Save By The Bell, which are to give young people in Dundee the opportunity to learn about saving and help them gain an understanding of how money works. Financial education is a top priority for Save By The Bell and it is the role of the management committee to help the charity achieve this objective. Expectations are that there will be at least five meetings per year, made up of four quarterly review meetings and an AGM held in May/June. All applicants will be considered as we believe a management committee with a diverse mix of skills and experience will best serve the charity.
