Description

Saheliya is a specialist mental health and well-being support organisation for black, minority ethnic, asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women and girls (12+) in the Edinburgh and Glasgow area. Our mission is to promote mental well-being by combating the effects of discrimination and abuse, reducing the stigma of mental health, and improving access to mainstream services. We are looking for 2 Volunteer Counsellors to provide individual counselling.

Organisation aims and objectives

Saheliya was set up in 1992 to provide a flexible range of services which supports the health and well being of Black and ethnic minority women in Edinburgh. Saheliya Befriending Service introduces black/ethnic minority women who are socially isolated, anxious or depressed to trained female black/ethnic minority volunteers and white volunteers with specific language skills. We provide training and ongoing support to volunteers.

Minimum 1 year, 3 clients per week, around 6 hours at various times.

Restrictions

Experience required: Qualified (Completed Postgraduate Diploma or equivalent). Previous counselling experience and understanding of BME issues that women face. Second language e.g. Arabic, Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi desirable, not necessary. Membership with BACP,UKCP or other relevant body. Good written and verbal communication.
