Organisation aims and objectives

Special Olympics GB is the largest registered charity providing year round sports training and competition opportunities for people with intellectual (learning) disabilities in Great Britain. The 40th anniversary games are being hosted by Special Olympics Scotland in Stirling, between 9-13th August 2018. The Games will welcome c.1,200 athletes, 400 coaches & officials, 500 volunteers and attract c. 5,000 family members and spectators to the event from across the UK and Europe. A primary focus of the Games is Play Unified to promote lasting relationships between disabled and non-disabled people through joint participation on and off the field of play. The Event’s international audience will help to showcase Scotland as a vibrant, leading, positive and inclusive country. We will target Young People, using a “Be bold, be kind, be awesome!” campaign. This helps challenge young people’s perceptions and attitudes towards young people with intellectual (learning) disabilities, creating a more unified next generation. All sports are divisioned to cater for all ability levels, including exclusive lower ability competition in Swimming, Athletics and Multi Activity Training Programme (MATP), enabling very low ability and multi disability athletes to enjoy competing at a high-profile national games. Athletes will attend from across the GB and European countries.
