Are you a doer with an interest in Africa?

We are seeking a new Treasurer for our small but fast-growing Penicuik-based charity, Friends of Chitambo SCIO. We support health projects at Chitambo Hospital, central Zambia, the living memorial to Scottish explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who died nearby.

Our main focus is on providing nurse training scholarships for disadvantaged students, ambulance maintenance, and emergency care improvements.

• This is a substantial, hands on, voluntary role, suiting someone experienced in bookkeeping or accountancy, with the time and commitment to offer e.g. retired, not working or working part-time and preferably local to Midlothian but not restricted to these groups.

• Minimum monthly time commitment: 8 hours
◦ plus at least 2 more hours a quarter for committee meetings (4/year)
▪ by telephone conference
◦ additional time at peak budget reporting periods
▪ around 5 financial reports/year, to OSCR, HMRC, Scottish Government, and charity AGM.
◦ Must liaise closely with charity Chair, including in face to face meetings as necessary.

Organisation aims and objectives

Friends of Chitambo is a small, active charity which provides support to remote, rural Chitambo Hospital and Nurse Training School in central Zambia: www.friendsofchitambo.org.uk Chitambo has very special links with Scotland as it is where Scottish explorer, David Livingstone died. Our activities include provision of medical equipment and supplies; ambulance maintenance; emergency radios and resources (books, computers, smartphones etc.); lifewraps (first aid garments to prevent blood loss in childbirth); nurse training scholarships for vulnerable students; nurse training manikins; nursing textbooks etc. We are working with the Chitambo community to strengthen their emergency their emergency care communications system.

Restrictions

No restrictions although, from past experience, we suspect this opportunity would suit a fairly recently retired person or someone not working or working part-time with time and energy to commit to it.
Experience required: Bookkeeping and accountancy skills.

Expenses details: We have an expenses policy which will be given to the volunteer.
Training details: The volunteer will be invited to meet Trustees and hear about the charity. They will then meet with the Chair who will detail the treasury work and requirements. The volunteer will have ample opportunities to ask questions and decide if the opportunity suits them. Assuming it does, they will subsequently work closely with the Chair, who will guide them in any areas required.
