We all need to stay at home to protect ourselves and others. However, those who are well and not at risk can provide essential support for their family, friends and neighbours who cannot leave the house.

Re-Engage (formerly Contact the Elderly) was set up in 1965, and is committed to older people being heard, valued and engaged. Supported by a network of volunteers, the charity organises monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people around 70 and over, who live alone, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month.
One Sunday afternoon each month, volunteer drivers will use their own car to pick up 1-2 older people who live locally and together visit a volunteer host’s home to join a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers and guests remain the same. This ensures that over time, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Drivers are not required to do any lifting, only assisting with a steadying arm.

Must have car, full driving licence, valid insurance and enjoy company of older people and a capacity for drinking tea!

As a driver we ask you to supply two references and we also take out a PVG before you start as a volunteer.

We ask our drivers to commit to 2-3 hours one Sunday a month and to contact their older guest(s) a few days before the monthly tea party to make sure they know when they are going to pick them up.

Organisation aims and objectives

The problem Over 1.4 million older people in the UK suffer from loneliness. Half a million of them say they go five or six days without seeing or speaking to anyone. Our impact We’re the only charity solely committed to tackling this problem by helping older people to re-engage with their communities through regular face-to-face contact, giving them a lifeline of friendship. How we do it At Re-engage, we work within your local community to set up regular social gatherings for small groups of people over 75, on their own, and hoping to find new ways to get out and about that suit them at this time of life.
