Could you be a role model for a young person who would really benefit from your time?

By giving just 2-3 hours a week you could be that positive, trusted and fun role model that a young person aged 8-14 really needs. You will meet weekly with your mentee for a minimum of 12 months, your mentee will experience quality one-to-one time with a consistent caring and reliable adult.

Through being a good listener, an empathic individual with a non-judgmental attitude a positive mentoring relationship can develop by doing activities that you both enjoy. Popular activities involve baking & cooking, arts & crafts, playing football, going to the beach or local forest walks, ice-skating or just enjoying a milkshake at a local café.

You have the potential to make a real difference in a young persons life by helping build confidence and self-esteem and most importantly being someone they can talk to about anything.

This role is subject to an application form being submitted, providing 2 references and completing a PVG Disclosure (is free for volunteers-details and PVG provided on application).

Organisation aims and objectives

At Befriend a Child we support school-aged children in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire who are growing up in difficult life circumstances. We match them with trained volunteers or ‘Befrienders’ or ‘Mentors’ who act as positive role models to help children develop resilience, self-confidence, and self-esteem.

Frequency and commitment details

Flexible times available. You will meet weekly with ?mentee? (child or young person aged between 8-14 years) for at least a year.

Restrictions

Experience required: -Reliability and commitment -Non judgemental -Respect for confidentiality -To be able to have fun and a sense of humour!
Travel details: intandem mentoring takes place in Aberdeen city centre and surrounding areas.
Minimum age: 19

Support

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Travel costs & expenses incurred during mentoring are reimbursed each month.
Training details: A specifically designed training package is delivered, sessions take place over the weekend and evenings. Ongoing support and guidance is provided by the intandem Volunteer Coordinator and there are also mentor get togethers.

Group Work Support Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers who can provide a strong foundation to help strengthen their communities by helping Care Experienced children and young people engage in activities to build their skills and confidence and to be included, understood, respected, and valued in their communities. The Group Work Support Volunteer role will work alongside our innovative and energetic East Lothian project team, supporting the delivery of the fortnightly East Lothian Champions Board groups. The group allows Care Experienced children and young people to build connections with others and provides a platform for them to raise their views and experiences to promote change. This role will involve interacting with young people aged 12-17 through supporting and leading on a variety of activities e.g. arts/crafts/sports/general youth work at our fortnightly sessions as well as at our National events that happen throughout the year. This role will help build connection and belonging for Care Experienced young people and provide a platform to allow them to influence positive change. Providing transport to young people to and from the fortnightly sessions is a key need for the group.

Awareness and Fundraising-Team Jak Ambassadors

Team Jak provides practical and emotional support to children and young people with cancer and related illnesses, their family and friends and those bereaved. Team Jak Ambassadors can have different roles including family support and fundraising, including - raising awareness and fundraising opportunities such as bag packs, helping at a merchandise stand and collection buckets in supermarkets, schools, colleges, shopping centres and concerts. We will be hosting a number of larger fundraising events in Aberdeen throughout the year with the aim to raise £70,000 to open our Jak’s Den in Aberdeen. Family support roles can be rewarding and involve anything from playing with the children during our activity days and at our child and teenage groups, to making tea and coffee at our support sessions, talking with parents, sorting out merchandise bags and delivering to our newly diagnosed warriors in hospital, and preparing items for events. Volunteers receive initial induction training, ongoing support and any further relevant training opportunities. Team Jak have an Awards scheme and we hold a yearly event dedicated to thanking our volunteers and celebrating their success. All volunteers make a real difference and are greatly appreciated. Young People Volunteer Befrienders

Hand of Solace is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organization working with isolated/lonely elders and young people by offering direct services and support , all designed to help people make the most of life. We have a range of exciting volunteer opportunities to assist in this and would be delighted to hear from anyone interested in joining our great volunteer team. This includes assisting with our Young People Befriending Service. Our Young People Volunteer Befrienders are matched on a 1:1 basis with a child aged (5-16) within the Aberdeen community and through caring, reliability and consistency build up a trusting relationship, thus providing positive role model. Befrienders shall support the young people to access/attend activities within the community to reduce isolation, promote self-confidence/esteem and to help young people to begin to learn life skills. Befriender Children and Young People aged 7 - 15 years

Volunteers are matched up on a one-to-one basis with either a vulnerable young person or a young adult. The matches meet regularly either weekly or fortnightly for a few hours at a time. The aim is to engage in purposeful activities within the community which wil help to encourage increased self-esteem, self-worth and self-confidence. It is also about building on the young person or young adults existing skills and developing new ones.
