Do you like to garden and build things? Would you like to support other volunteers to do this as well? Do you have a few hours free each week to mentor at The Heugh Community Growing Garden?

We are developing the old Tranent Gasworks site on The Heugh into a community growing garden and a resource for the local community. We are looking for volunteers to help support less experienced volunteers build confidence and gardening skills.

Organisation aims and objectives

To support individuals and communities to engage with nature and deliver volunteer led solutions to help improve the environment. A community growing garden providing volunteers with space to learn about organic growing, healthy eating, recycling and sustainability while sharing skills and socialising to the wider community we offer a natural space for outdoor events, environmental workshops and training.

Restrictions

Access to the site is via a steep flight of steps which would be a struggle for anyone with limited mobility, although additional access can be found using a 200m level path from the back of the old Brig Inn. Contact Lorraine for further information.
Experience required: If you have an interest in supporting client groups who might need some additional help with their volunteering, and enjoy gardening and outdoor work, please get in touch! We are looking for volunteers who: - demonstrate a supportive and caring attitude towards others - have good communication skills and an ability to listen - have awareness of other people's levels of abilities
Travel details: This opportunity takes place in Tranent, East Lothian and is accessible by car, bus and on foot.
Minimum age: 18

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: We can arrange an informal visit to the site and an introduction to other team members.
Training details: Tool safety talk and introduction to the site when you start volunteering and ongoing instruction and demonstrations of tools and activities. Ongoing support for mentors will be provided.
