Do you have what it takes to change a young person's life for the better? Could you spare 1 - 2 hours a week? Move On is currently recruiting Volunteer Mentors for our intandem service across West Lothian. We’re looking for enthusiastic and open-minded adults from all walks of life to volunteer to work with children and young people aged 8 - 14 who are looked after at home. You’ll be working on a one to one basis with the young person, using your own life experiences and skills to encourage them to achieve their goals. Training will take place on the 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th January and 3rd February. For an application pack, or to find out more about the role, please get in touch! We are accepting applications now.

Organisation aims and objectives

Move On operates from bases in Edinburgh and Glasgow, targeting people affected by homelessness and vulnerable young people. We offer: • schools-based group work, workshops and advice and information delivery • employability activities, e.g. early engagement, CV preparation, job search, personal development, building basic skills, group work, work experience and aftercare • one to one community-based support, including volunteer befriending, mentoring and peer mentoring • peer education, providing vital information and advice on a range of issues • literacy and numeracy tutoring • money and debt advice • ‘FareShare Glasgow and the West of Scotland’ a food re-use initiative, tackling food poverty, health inequalities and offering significant employability opportunities • volunteering opportunities Our service users have a variety of specific support needs, including poor physical/mental health, homelessness, substance misuse, offending, money/debt problems, lack of qualifications or engagement in any kind of training, volunteering, education or employment. Many also share broader needs such as low self-belief and confidence, loneliness and isolation, difficulties managing the transition towards independence, lack of positive social networks, personal goals and aspirations. We recognise that individuals need to be in control of deciding and achieving their own goals, so we offer services flexibly allowing for their differing needs. Move On delivers outcome-focused services, seeking to maximise the impact of what we do rather than simply seeing the activities as an end in themselves. Our services enable people to: help themselves, grow in confidence, secure and sustain accommodation, build positive social networks, develop employability skills and access and sustain jobs, training and education.

Experience required: No particular experience or skills are necessary - but a strong belief in the potential of young people is essential. Full training will be given, and once you're matched with a young person we'll expect you to be committed to them for at least a year.
