Volunteer Walking Companion (Dunfermline)

Description

We are committed to supporting our blind veterans no matter where they are.

Our member in Dunfermline served in the Royal Army Service Corps. He would like to get out once a week in his local area to go on short walks in the nice weather at a local park. He enjoys giving new things a go and hobbies include golf and bowls.

Our volunteers provide crucial social interaction for our veterans who can’t reach our Centres and can sometimes feel isolated or lonely. For this role, we are looking for volunteers who aren’t afraid to get stuck in, and even learn new skills themselves.

Volunteers must be over the age of 18 and understand the importance of relationship boundaries. The role can be flexible around your other commitments, but we ask that you are reliable and punctual for our veterans. You will be fully trained and supported so you feel comfortable and confident in your volunteering.

Organisation aims and objectives

We are Blind Veterans UK and we believe that no one who has served our country should battle blindness alone. That's why we're here to help with lifelong practical and emotional support which we provide to Armed Forces and National Service veterans regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight. We help veterans recover their independence and discover a life beyond sight loss. Our charity has been offering physical and emotional support to vision-impaired veterans since 1915. Blind Veterans UK's work ranges from helping veterans relearn vital life skills and providing them with the tools they need to be independent in their own homes, to offering new learning, training and recreation opportunities and providing long-term nursing, residential and respite care.

Expenses details: 45p a mile, expenses paid as form submitted (monthly usually)
Training details: Some training online and some in person such as Guiding Skills. Volunteer Coordinator is available for support and an Employee Assistance Programme.

Outings Companion (Angus)

Can you spare a couple of hours a week to brighten someone’s day? We are committed to supporting our blind veterans no matter where they are. Our community volunteers provide crucial social interaction for our veterans who can’t reach our centres, and can often feel isolated or lonely. Outings Volunteers are there to make sure everything runs smoothly and ensure that all our blind veterans can get involved with all parts of the day. This could be helping people on and off transport, guiding a veteran to help them orientate themselves or providing descriptions of things or events where they may not be able to see. For this role, we are looking for volunteers who aren’t afraid to get stuck in, and even learn new skills themselves. You will never be asked to do any personal care. Our blind veteran in the Forfar area of Angus would like a volunteer to be their guide so that they can enjoy short, local walks and trips to the café. Due to the rural location you will need to have your own car, but we will cover all reasonable expenses. Volunteers must be over the age of 21 and have held their license for 2+ years. Volunteers must also understand the importance of relationship boundaries. The role can be flexible around your other commitments, but we ask that you are reliable and punctual for our veterans. You will be fully trained and supported so you feel comfortable and confident in your volunteering.

Community Support Volunteers (Aberdeen & North Aberdeenshire)

Join our amazing team of Community Support Volunteers in Aberdeen and North Aberdeenshire, who support people who have had one of our conditions to develop autonomy and confidence in self-management, enabling them to fully engage with their community and activities of their choosing. The service follows a pathway from hospital to community and can be delivered in a one-to-one and/or group setting in person, virtually or via telephone. We also have opportunities for volunteers to become Walk Leaders, to safely lead community health walks either in a 1:1 or group setting, while effectively supporting people living with and at high risk of our conditions. The service can be delivered to provide person-centred support for those with a communication difficulty and/or to support an individual to achieve a specific goal. A fantastic opportunity to help and make a real difference for people and the community. Excellent support and relevant training is provided to all volunteers and all assistance is greatly appreciated. One to One Volunteer Befriender

One to One Volunteer Befriender We are looking for friendly and reliable people who enjoy the company of others. Sensory Awareness training will be provided and so no previous experience of working with people who has sight/hearing loss is required. A PVG check will be required for this role, and we would be looking for a minimum of 6 months commitment. Tasks • To provide company and emotional support • To assist service user to develop social contacts by joining community events and social groups • To support a service user with shopping • To provide telephonic befriending when necessary • To accompany service user to café or for a healthy walk • To commit to a minimum of 6 hours per month. We are looking for volunteer/s who drive and can assist our service users with transport. But not driving would not exclude you from being suitable for the role.
