As a Ward Helper in the largest acute hospital in Edinburgh, you will assist with distributing refreshments and meals to patients as well as offering a listening ear and an opportunity for conversation during their stay.
You need to be attentive, compassionate and a confident communicator. Our busiest times are mealtimes at 12pm for lunch and refreshment rounds at 10am and 2pm.

3 hours a week for a commitment of 6 months
Volunteers must be able to wear a blue surgical mask for the duration of their volunteering session.
Experience required: Good communication and listening skills, non-judgemental and sensitive approach, positive attitude and willingness to learn, confident and friendly manner, and an understanding of empathy. Full training will be provided for the role.
Travel details: On many bus routes within walking distance of the hospital. There is on site parking but can be difficult.

Expenses details: Travel expenses, can be claimed every day. Reimbursement typically within 2 weeks. If volunteering during office hours, can claim cash in hand from cashier’s office.
£0.25 per mile mileage rate.
Training details: The induction training is done over Microsoft Teams and will involve 3 separate sessions lasting 2 hours each. Topics: fire safety, infection control, boundaries for volunteering, equality & diversity, self-care and communicating with patients.
