We rely on the help of the many volunteers who give their time and their talents to us freely. We always need dedicated and reliable volunteers that can help out and new volunteers are always welcome.

There are many volunteering opportunities including working directly with our dogs, manual and maintenance, fostering, becoming a home checker, fundraising and helping at our events. Yet for safety reasons, we ask you to start off as a general volunteer with us and once you have gained the trust of our rescues, then you can start to volunteer directly with our dogs.

Volunteering not only benefits our dogs but also provides lots of benefits for our volunteers too including:

  • Meeting like-minded people who are passionate about animal welfare
  • Gaining new skills or developing existing ones
  • Gaining a sense of achievement by doing something rewarding
  • Putting something back into the community
  • Developing personal skills and confidence

Please note that if you wish to volunteer at the centre, it does involve physical work and due to our location your own transport is essential.

For on-site roles you will be invited to attend an induction course with our team when you will be asked to show ID and full proof of address before you can take up a volunteering role with us.

On site sessions will currently be at our principle site in Ayr.

The different types of sessions are as follows:

CORE session – daytime, on site including poop picking, kennel cleaning and water checks.
SUPPORT sessions – other on-site activities which may include any of the activities listed below as required by SRS at the time.
SORT session – on site (or may be at home) sorting and preparing donations (daytime or evening).
BARTER session – offsite (with on-site collection – requires transport) supporting with bartering deals made, collecting donations and may also include help with taking washing to the large wash centres.
EVENT sessions – preparing and running events such as car boot sales, tabletop sales etc.

Organisation aims and objectives

Saving and Rehoming Strays is a small SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation No SC051584) based in Scotland with a mission to rescue and rehome dogs in the UK. As well as UK dogs we also partner with organisations in Europe, principally Romania, to identify dogs in need and support their path to finding a forever home. We believe in rescue without borders and that every dog deserves an opportunity to find a family of their own. Saving and Rehoming Strays is run by small team, primarily volunteers, giving their time for admin, fundraising, and looking after of the dogs in our care plus experienced rescuers in Romania and the UK. We have a small rehoming centre in Scotland where our dogs will go for assessment, rehabilitation and ultimately rehoming in an environment not like traditional rehoming centres. Where appropriate our dogs live in groups and experience time with volunteers to allow them opportunity to socialise and get them ready to go to a new home. Alternatively, our dogs go to forever foster homes for their retirement.

Adult Volunteers

Murton Trust is a registered charity and Murton Farm, Tea Room and Nature Reserve is also a popular visitor attraction based 2 miles outside of Forfar, Angus and currently has opportunities for anyone interested in volunteering. Do you have a few hours to spare? Would you like to get involved in helping Murton Trust? As an adult volunteer with us you can share a particular skill you have whether that be organisational providing office support, photography social media and estate management. However, experience or specific skill set is not needed as we will provide training to volunteers. If you have the ability to work independently this is highly advantageous, however, should you require a bit of support this is also available for a limited number of people too. Outdoor Education Assistant

An exciting opportunity to join the Under the Trees team, working in the great and beautiful outdoors whilst gaining valuable experience working with young children and young adults. You will potentially be working in all weathers and in all seasons - we can provide waterproofs! Under the Trees runs fun and educational sessions for school children in the Falkirk and Stirling areas, as well as a programme of public events for all ages, backgrounds and abilities. Events run all year round. As a Volunteer Education Assistant, there will be opportunities for you to do a range of the following: - Assist with Educational Sessions for school groups, including term-time forest schools. - Assist with sessions for the general public, including a monthly nature club for ages 0-13. - Assist with holiday play sessions and family events. - Plan and lead in activities. - Maintain resources effectively. - Keep session areas safe and tidy. - Desk-based activities in planning, creating materials and administration.

Shetland Cat Rescue Volunteer

A wide range of opportunities are available and include: Fosterers – a spare room to care for a cat until a new home is found. All equipment and food etc provided. Home checkers – visiting prospective new cat owners. Fostering support and co ordination – helping fosterers and organising cat food distribution, equipment etc Equipment inventory – keeping an up to date list of all equipment and its location. Helpline – taking phone calls from the public. Food store coordinator – making sure fosterers have sufficient food of an appropriate type and caring for supplies. Kitten socialising – assisting fosterers to socialise young kittens to meeting different people and get used to them. TNR Trap, Neuter and Return – trapping feral cats, taking them to the vets to be neutered and then releasing them back to site. Involves learning about the colony and getting them used to being fed in a trap; arranging neutering with the vets; keeping the cats safe until fully recovered and able to rejoin the colony; arranging for kittens young enough to be socialised to be fostered. Transport – cats to vets etc; goods and equipment to where needed. Collecting and sorting donated goods. Storing donated goods, equipment and cat food. Fundraiser – to organise fundraising events. On line auctions – organise online auctions of donated goods. Stall helpers – assisting on stalls. Crafts – making crafts to sell. Grant applications – find and apply for appropriate grants and funding. Sunday tea staff – assisting at Sunday teas. Trustee – joining the trustees. Marketing. DIY – DIY skills to help maintain pens and equipment
