Description

As a rainbow call companion, you will be someone who identifies as LGBT+ who wants to support lonely older LGBT+ people. You will be the main point of contact for the rainbow call companions and older people in your group. Our rainbow call companion coordinators are a vital part of the Re-engage team, ensuring that their group of rainbow call companions have all the support and information they need to make regular friendship calls to older people.

This is a challenging and rewarding role which might be a bit busy to begin with but will take up less of your time once your group is fully up and running. You’ll be checking in with your group members once a month, and you’ll conduct a short wellbeing questionnaire with the older people in the group every six months.
Tasks include:

Setting up the first rainbow call companion calls for your group by getting in touch with the rainbow call companions and older people.

Checking in with the older people in your group once they have had their first rainbow call companion call.

Keeping in regular contact with your team of rainbow call companions and sharing any updates from Re-engage that are relevant to them.

Responding to any issues and queries from the rainbow call companions and older people in your group.

Organisation aims and objectives

Contact the Elderly is the only UK charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people. We do this by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people (aged 75+) who live alone, and volunteers within their local community, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for afternoon tea. The group is warmly welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Our tea parties are a real lifeline of friendship for our older guests who have little or no contact with family or friends. They bring people of all ages together, develop fulfilling friendships and support networks, and give everyone involved something to look forward to each month.
