Every day Home-Start Aberdeen is providing life-changing support to families across the city. Our local community network of trained volunteers helps families with young children when they need us most.

Home-Start’s Home Visiting Volunteers work alongside families, offering compassionate and confidential support, tailored to what each family wants and needs. They undergo extensive training and are supported by our expert staff team. Most of our home visiting volunteers have some parenting experience; they understand that family life can be tough sometimes, which is why their support is so valuable to another family.

*Our Home Visiting Volunteers:
· Visit families weekly in their own homes
· Offer friendship, emotional support and practical help and be a regular, reliable presence for families
· Reassure families that bringing up children can be challenging and everybody needs help sometimes
· Emphasise the positive aspects of family life
· Draw on their own experience to help parents develop their skills, improve their confidence and build better lives for their children
· Keep children at the centre of the support focusing on their wellbeing and safety and ensuring the best possible outcomes for them

*We offer our Home Visiting Volunteers:
· Excellent preparation for the role through our Volunteer Preparation training course
· Regular and frequent support and supervision meetings, and ongoing help and advice, from a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator
· Ongoing training and personal development opportunities
· The opportunity to make new friends and build social networks
· Involvement in a vital local service which is part of a national and global network

Home visiting requires energy, commitment, reliability, creativity and a sense of humour. It can be exciting or challenging but above all it is extremely rewarding and worthwhile.

Organisation aims and objectives

We are one of Scotland’s largest Home-Start schemes, providing up to 180 families and 270 children with 27,500 hours of emotional and practical support in their own homes each year. Home-Start Aberdeen works with families to help them: •gain access to relevant health and welfare services •manage family budgets and nutrition •engage with their communities •enjoy family life again.

Restrictions

Experience required: We are looking for warm, compassionate people with a sense of humour and a realistic outlook on life.
Travel details: Volunteering Opportunities take place throughout Aberdeen City. Home-Starts main office is in the centre of Aberdeen (Langstane House, 6 Dee Street, Aberdeen).
Minimum age: 16

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Any relevant travel costs eg. bus fares, mileage and parking costs are offered/re-imbursed to volunteers.
Training details: Full training and excellent support is provided to all volunteers. The volunteer, the family and the Home-Start Co-ordinator work together as a team.

Kids Activities Volunteer

As Part Of The Angus Council Holiday Programme , We Are Looking For Additional Volunteers During The Angus School Holidays in 2024 Saturday 6th April & Sunday 7th April Friday 28 June to Monday 12 August 2024 Monday 7 October to Friday 18 October Friockheim Park Community Volunteers Are Offering Stay & Play Sessions At All These Sessions We Will Be Providing Hot/Cold Drinks, Refreshments & Fresh Fruit To Both Children & Adults. Family Support Volunteer

Home-Start are looking for volunteers with parenting experience or experience of working/volunteering with children/families to help families (with at least one child aged 8 or under) who could use some additional support. Volunteers use their experiences of parenting or work/volunteering with children/families to help by offering emotional and practical support to families, with the aim of enabling them to lead less stressful and more enjoyable lives. The needs of individual families will vary but as a Home-visiting Volunteer you could be involved in anything from engaging in fun activities with the children and helping parents with managing behaviour to practical or emotional support for the families. We take all our volunteers through a FREE training course to ensure that they are fully prepared and confident in the role. This is a great opportunity to grow and gain experience in a support-focused role. You'll also have the chance to meet new people, learn new skills and use your knowledge to improve the lives of local families and children. Usually volunteers support families for around 2-3 hours a week and the time is flexible to suit your availability.

Become a Peer Mentor for Parents

Are you a parent in Scotland? Do you remember what it was like becoming a first time parent? The Why Not Trust are looking for volunteers to become Peer Mentors, providing support to soon to be or new care-experienced parents. We know it take a village to raise a child, but not everyone has the same support networks around them. We aim to create a judgment and stigma-free community of mentors and mentees where trusting one-to-one relationships can be established. What does a Peer Mentor do? • Chat with your mentee on a regular basis, roughly 4 hours per month • Encourage, empower and champion your mentee • Provide gentle guidance in relation to parenting • Engage with your mentee in a non judgemental, caring and supportive way Some of the many benefits our volunteers can expect: • Become part of a supportive and welcoming community • Get matched with a fellow parent you have something in common with • Meetings that fit your schedule – online or in person • Receive accredited mentor training • Get paid for your travel expenses and other expenses • Improve your own confidence as well as your mentees • Develop your communication and listening skills The Why Not?
