VTO provides free tutor support to children and young people aged 8-18, to help tackle the poverty related attainment gap in Scotland. We work with young people from diverse backgrounds including, but not limited to, those who are care experienced, those who speak English as an additional language (EAL) or those faced with perceived barriers to learning. Our volunteers focus on developing a person-centred tutoring experience through relationship building to instil confidence and increase motivation and educational attainment. Volunteers from a range of diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcome. What will I be doing? • Working one to one with a young person who requires support with their learning online. You can choose to take part in our QuESTS programme (Qualifications for Every Student Through Tutor Support) which is a form of tutoring aimed at helping a young person achieve a qualification (a member of our team will discuss the different opportunities available upon application) • Relationship building and mentoring • Monitoring and recording progress of learning and keeping in contact with your assigned VTO Learning Communities Coordinator. • Supporting learning in English and/or Maths and potentially other subjects, dependant on experience and pupil need • Sourcing and creating engaging ways to support pupils’ skills and learning. • You can ask to work with more than one pupil if you have the time available. • We ask for a minimum commitment of 6 months from being matched with a young person and ideally until the end of the academic year. Support Volunteer induction training is delivered in a dynamic and interactive online session and a timetable of additional (optional) training is made available throughout the year focussing on topics such as dyslexia, Autism, Care Experience and EAL. You will be allocated a VTO Learning Communities Coordinator to support you whilst volunteering. You will have full access to our online tutor forum where tutors share ideas on how to get the best of their tutoring experience. We’re looking for Volunteers aged 16+ from across the UK to join our virtual crew! As a Volunteer Crewmate, you’ll join our online, teacher-led afterschool sessions to help children aged 9 to 13 develop their reading and writing skills. By championing their work and celebrating everything they do, you will help them, one-to-one and in small groups on our online platform Vedamo, to become published authors! We’re looking for people who are positive about social change and love literacy. No experience working with children or young people is necessary as full training is provided. Sessions run during term time Mon-Fri, 3:45-6:15pm.

Patient Partners are members of the public who assist in the practice and learning sessions by being available to speak to and be examined by our students. There is no prior training or experiences necessary to be selected to join the Programme, all we ask is that a Patient Partner be willing to help, reliable and most importantly have a good sense of humour! Patient Partners may role play a health problem from a scenario (short description of symptoms and how they have been affecting you, as well as a social and medical history) so that medical and dental students can practise interviewing patients away from the hussle and bussle of a busy hospital ward. Patient Partners may also be used for non-invasive procedures/examinations (for example, the taking of a blood pressure, listening to a patient’s lungs or having joints examined/put through normal movements). There is no prior training or experiences necessary, all we ask is that you are willing to help, reliable and most importantly have a good sense of humour!
