Full-Time Volunteer Mentor

  • VO92228

Description

ProjectScotland (part of the national charity Volunteering Matters) uses the unique power of volunteering to support young people to move on in life. We have a 5-month opportunity for a full-time volunteer to support our programmes working in partnership with high schools across Edinburgh. We are currently based in two high schools (Castlebrae Community Campus and St Thomas of Aquin’s High School) where we run a volunteering programme for pupils, particularly those on flexible timetables, who have barriers that prevent them from achieving a positive pathway to the next stage of their lives. With our support, the pupils complete volunteering placements with local charities and social enterprises as a way of developing their skills and confidence in new environments outside of school.
This is a great opportunity for a young person who is interested in taking a gap year to volunteer directly with young people to positively impact their lives and make a difference in their community. To support the Volunteer Mentor in their journey with us, our organisation will make a contribution to the volunteer towards their living costs, as well as covering any out-of-pocket expenses incurred during their volunteering commitment.

The Volunteer Mentor role will involve supporting the pupils engaging on the programme, with the help of project staff and the school community. Volunteers are not expected to have any prior skills or experience as full training and support will be provided. However, we are looking for someone who can commit up to 30 hours per week to undertake the role, show dedication and are willing to learn new skills. The role may vary considerably day-to-day depending on the needs and interests of the young people you will support, and development opportunities will be offered to you as the Volunteer Mentor throughout the placement.
As a Volunteer Mentor, you will take part in:
Developing relationships with pupils who are participating in the volunteering programme

  • Accompanying pupils to their chosen volunteer placements and, if required, volunteer alongside pupils in a supervisory role
  • Supporting with the wider volunteering culture within the school
  • Introducing young people to new opportunities
  • Helping with appropriate volunteering administration tasks
  • Researching local opportunities and helping to maintain relationships with our charity partners

What we’re looking for -

  • Be sociable and positive

  • Interest in volunteering with teenagers (aged 13-17)

  • Have a patient and flexible mindset
  • Be proactive
