Listening Volunteer

  • VO91881

The Samaritans provide emotional support to anyone who is struggling to cope and who needs someone to listen without judgement. Sometimes just by being at the end of the phone can help a caller steer themselves away from a crisis and get their life back on track. We don’t advise, we don’t judge and we do not persuade people down certain paths – we are simply there when people are at their lowest and need to talk. No call is ever deemed unimportant – everyone is given the same empathetic ear no matter how big or small the problem.
We are a friendly team of volunteers from all over Perthshire and from all walks of life and we are always looking for more people to come and join us! Training and mentoring means you will be well prepared to take on the role, and leaders and colleagues are always there to make sure you feel supported with each step you take. We ask our volunteers to give just three hours of their time each week. This is a challenging but hugely rewarding volunteering role – a chance to be there for people in times of need.

Organisation aims and objectives

To be available 24 hrs a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress or dispair, including those which may lead to suicide. To help create a stronger less isolated society in which fewer people die by suicide, people are able to explore their feelings and to acknowledge and respect the feelings of others.

Experience required: We are looking for open-minded people who feel they could leave personal feelings and prejudices aside and there to support people in crisis. No experience is necessary as full training is given. A basic knowledge of computers is necessary but help will also be given to those who need it.
Travel details: The branch is located in Perth, very near the station and next to the South Inch. There are steps into the building. There is on street parking.
Minimum age: 18
