Session Supporter, Westwood, East Kilbride

Description

Do you love talking about sport? Our clubs support older people who enjoy reminiscing about sport. Our volunteers love a bit of banter and sessions are about everyone having fun!

We need volunteers with an ability to communicate well with others and to support club members who have memory or physical health problems. The most important skill is to be able to listen and to encourage participants to engage and to get involved in the discussion. The Session Supporter helps the Session Facilitator to set up and run the club and is part of a team of 3-4 volunteers who work together to improve the well-being of club members. One of our volunteers has said: "It is rewarding watching club members become more confident.” Our volunteer induction process involves:

  • An online or face-to-face introduction to Sporting Memories.
  • An online training session re planning and running a club session (3 hours).
  • Ongoing support and further training opportunities.

Organisation aims and objectives

We are a charity and social enterprise that helps older people to reminiscence, replay and reconnect through the power of sport and physical activity. Launched in 2011, Sporting Memories supports a wide range of people aged 50-plus, including those living with dementia, living with depression or facing isolation and loneliness to improve their mental and physical wellbeing through our regular club sessions, situated within local communities across England, Scotland and Wales. We are dedicated to bringing older people together with the aim of making a positive difference in their lives by providing them with a welcoming, supportive and structured environment where they can develop confidence to improve their lives for the better.   Sporting Memories achieves this by offering a range of support mechanisms and unique products which are designed to aid the development and running of sessions in a range of locations including community and leisure centres, care homes, hospitals and a range of settings.
