Event Assistant

Description

Action Porty are looking for event volunteers who can help with one or a number of different community events. Previous events have included Porty's Christmas Lights 'Switch On', a street festival celebrating bikes, Porty Flea fleamarket and concerts. This role varies depending on which community events are planned. Events may be indoors or outdoors.

Organisation aims and objectives

'Action Porty manage Bellfield, a place to belong. The former church is now in community ownership, and the various spaces are used for classes, celebrations, events and other community uses. They run exciting community volunteer run projects with plenty of development opportunities.

Restrictions

Experience required: Minimum requirements: ability to follow instructions and communicate with organisers and other volunteers. Desirable skills: working as part of a team; ability to take initiative when needed; adaptable to different tasks; speaking clearly to issue instructions to members of the public.
Travel details: Bellfield,16A&B Bellfield St, Edinburgh EH15 2BP. Bellfield is a vibrant community space in the heart of Portobello. Formerly Portobello Old Parish Church, Bellfield offers hire space for every occasion and a programme of regular classes and events. Since opening in June 2018 following a community buy-out, our halls have become a hub for Portobello's lively community, providing a local venue for people to come together to meet ,play and celebrate. Buses: Bellfield is 0.1 mile from nearest bus stop for buses 26,45,19 and 0.4 mile from Portobello Town Hall bus stop for buses 21,49,12.

Training details: Generally there will be information sent by email or given over the phone and a briefing at the beginning of the event or beginning of a shift.

Support Session Volunteer

Could you support unpaid carers or people with disabilities to access benefits? Could you help someone find local services? Volunteer Independent Advocate

The role with Dumfries and Galloway Advocacy Service is to provide Independent Advocacy to vulnerable people across Dumfries and Galloway. To both empower and enable clients to be heard and to take as much control of their situation as is possible. Being an Independent Advocate involves listening and making sure the client’s thoughts and wishes are understood and that the clients' voice is heard. It is about the client being in control of their situation. As well as having face-to-face and virtual meetings with your client there will be a requirement for all meetings and communications on the progression of the client’s case to be kept electronically. For this reason, you must have access to a laptop / computer, the internet and a landline or mobile phone. You must be able to keep confidences (organisational exceptions) and boundaries, express yourself clearly in verbal / written form, work as part of a team and on one’s own, be able to use email, word etc and carry out work electronically. You will also be required to attend meetings with the client and source information to allow the person to make informed choices. You will make a difference to other people’s lives; develop new skills and meet new people and you will work alongside a small friendly team.
