Befrienders for Young People with Cystic Fibrosis

Description

The Butterfly Trust are a Scottish registered charity that offer direct one to one support to people living with Cystic Fibrosis. We are helping to empower people with Cystic Fibrosis in Scotland.

This befriending opportunity allows the befriender to make a positive difference for a young person, while also growing their own experience and enhancing their life skills. Our befrienders offer one to one support to a young person aged 8 to 18, who has Cystic Fibrosis.

Young people living with this condition have a demanding daily treatment regime at home and sometimes experience limitations that can affect their confidence and ability to cope with the challenges of everyday living. They may also be socially isolated because of their condition.

A befriender will meet with the young person every 1 to 2 weeks, to build a trusting one to one relationship. A commitment of at least a year is required - this will allow the young person time, space and a suitable environment to explore their feelings, discuss their fears, develop life skills and grow in the areas where they may be struggling.

Organisation aims and objectives

Our aim is that people living with Cystic Fibrosis will have access to the support they need to ensure they can benefit from optimum homecare and enjoy the best quality of life in the community.

Frequency and commitment details

Flexible times available to suit volunteers. All help greatly appreciated.

Restrictions

Experience required: Good listening skills, patience, reliable and an adaptable attitude.
Travel details: The young person will live within a reasonable travelling distance from volunteer’s who help.
Minimum age: 19

Support

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: We reimburse travel (and subsistence when relevant) costs and any agreed activity expenses.
Training details: Full training and excellent support is provided to all volunteers. Induction is one day covering the condition, the befriending process and procedures, interpersonal skills, Trust procedures. One team day per year for ongoing training. Support from befriending co-ordinator member of Trust’s staff.

Awareness and Fundraising-Team Jak Ambassadors

Team Jak provides practical and emotional support to children and young people with cancer and related illnesses, their family and friends and those bereaved. Team Jak Ambassadors can have different roles including family support and fundraising, including - raising awareness and fundraising opportunities such as bag packs, helping at a merchandise stand and collection buckets in supermarkets, schools, colleges, shopping centres and concerts. We will be hosting a number of larger fundraising events in Aberdeen throughout the year with the aim to raise £70,000 to open our Jak’s Den in Aberdeen. Family support roles can be rewarding and involve anything from playing with the children during our activity days and at our child and teenage groups, to making tea and coffee at our support sessions, talking with parents, sorting out merchandise bags and delivering to our newly diagnosed warriors in hospital, and preparing items for events. Volunteers receive initial induction training, ongoing support and any further relevant training opportunities. Team Jak have an Awards scheme and we hold a yearly event dedicated to thanking our volunteers and celebrating their success. All volunteers make a real difference and are greatly appreciated. Support Volunteers

Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, life-limiting, genetically inherited condition with no cure. We are the leading provider of social support to the Cystic Fibrosis community of Scotland, providing face-to-face services for individuals and families, and access to the support needed to ensure they benefit from optimum homecare and enjoy the best quality of life. Volunteering is a fantastic way to make a difference to the life of someone else, and an opportunity to enhance your own life and build new skills. The support worker undertakes tasks that make a real difference to the quality of life for the young people we support. He/she is our first point of contact with clients responding to requests that are often for practical help but also just someone to talk to. Support workers receive training to develop skills in understanding and completing official forms, and can be trained to provide advocacy if they wish to be more challenged. Residentials Volunteer

Over The Wall is a charity for children and young people with health challenges and disabilities to discover a world of mischief and magic. We provide a safe place to step outside of comfort zones, establish friendships and build confidence through meaningful and exciting activities. We run residentials in England and Scotland, as well as virtual activity camps for families in the UK to join from their own homes. We need volunteers each year to help run our programmes. Mentors

Volunteering is a fantastic way to make a difference to the life of someone else, and an opportunity to enhance your own life and build new skills. Mentors offer support to young adults with Cystic Fibrosis in improving socialisation, broadening horizons and exploring concerns to improve self-esteem, enhance coping skills and the person's quality of life. A mentor will meet with a young adult regularly (every 2-3 weeks typically) to build a trusting one-to-one relationship allowing the person to explore their feelings, discuss their aspirations and grow life skills, to support them in achieving goals or just giving them someone to talk to. A commitment of at least a year is important to enable the relationship to develop. A great opportunity to make a real difference for people.
