Description

Digital Buddies combine befriending with digital literacy mentoring, so your role could include:

• delivering tablets to people at home and helping them set up their new devices for use
• Attending drop-in sessions to support attendees with specific digital queries (e.g. setting up an email, etc)
• Showing learners how to make video calls and use messaging apps
• accessing online learning opportunities
• explaining how to stay safe online
• helping to problem solve where you don’t know the answer yourself
• enjoying a chat with people to find some common interests and build a rapport quickly
• helping people to find online resources that match their interests
• Reporting on progress made and encouraging volunteers to provide feedback on sessions.

Blackwood Homes and Care was founded in 1972 by Dr Margaret Blackwood MBE, a campaigner for the rights and independence of disabled people. We deliver our vision of helping people live their life to the full in the pioneering spirit of Dr Blackwood by providing high quality housing, care and support for disabled people of all ages, with over 1500 homes across all 29 mainland local authorities.

Restrictions

Experience required: You don't need to be a technology expert, but you do need to be confident in your own digital skills. In addition, the following personal qualities are a must: • Friendly, approachable, and eager to help others learn new skills • A good listener • Ability to explain things in simple terms • An understanding of people’s interests and motivations for learning • Passionate about the positive impact digital can have on people’s lives • Patience • Flexibility
Travel details: Charleston - Remotely & In Person when possible
Minimum age: 18

Support

Taster available: Yes
Taster details: Volunteers will be able to attend a virtual or in-person drop in session where they can chat informally with learners and decide if it's the right opportunity for them
Training details: We'll provide training both online and in-person which will cover Digital champion training, mentoring skills, role boundaries, Health & Safety, cyber security and an introduction to our organisation.
