The Food Train is an award-winning charity which operates throughout Scotland, supporting older people in local communities to remain living in their own home, as independently as possible.

Our driver volunteers drive our small vans with another volunteer helper beside you, delivering grocery shopping to older people in the local community. Our shopping service members are so grateful for this service, which is a lifeline for many and an important source of social contact, as much as providing access to food and helping our members live longer and more independently in their own homes. This is a great way to use your spare time to help older people in your local community!

The role involves:

  • Driving a medium sized van, following a delivery route with a volunteer helper.
  • Delivering food shopping to older people in the Falkirk area.
  • Loading and unloading small grocery boxes.
  • Assisting with putting away shopping in people's homes.
  • Completing a small amount of paperwork.
  • Either meeting the Food Train van at the supermarket or collecting it from the Food Train Falkirk office in the morning (we have arrangements so you can leave your car free of charge).

Organisation aims and objectives

Food Train Connects is a registered charity, voluntary organisation and social enterprise. Since 1995 Food Train Connects has been making daily life easier for older people, providing vital services to those who are no longer able to manage independently, through age, ill health, frailty or disability. Food Train Connects makes hundreds of grocery deliveries every week, ensuring those most in need have access to fresh groceries. Teams of dedicated local volunteers across the regions also go that extra mile by helping with household jobs, delivering books through our library service and providing much needed friendly social contact and meals through our Meal Makers and befriending services.

Frequency and commitment details

This volunteer driver role is currently available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and/or Thursdays each week hours (approx.) 09:30am-14.30pm. We shop in Asda Falkirk on Tuesdays and Morrisons Falkirk on Wednesdays and Thursdays, 52 weeks of the year. Shopping and Delivery days will be adjusted for the festive period, as we do not operate on the festive public holidays.

Restrictions

Experience required: Other than a drivers license, we don't require any specific skills or experience but it is important that our volunteers are patient, kind and able to communicate clearly with our shopping service members

Delivery Driver Volunteers

Glencraft are a social enterprise and charity, dating back to 1843. We provide employment opportunities to disabled and disadvantaged persons in Aberdeen, with a particular focus on visual impairment, and we do so by manufacturing high quality mattresses. Our mattresses are shipped around the UK, and even to China and Canada, but we also sell to a loyal customer base in Aberdeen, from our factory and showroom in Mastrick. For local sales, we undertake the deliveries ourselves, using our own van. We are currently seeking volunteer support for deliveries. Deliveries are typically limited to within 30 miles of Aberdeen, and we try to limit them to Thursday mornings. The role requires the person to have good communication skills to keep a good relationship with customers, requires good physical fitness to help carry mattresses up stairs to customers rooms, and clean personal appearance to represent the Glencraft brand in a positive manner. The volunteering can also include some simple assembly work of bed bases and headboards, so basic DIY skills would be helpful. Due to limitations on our insurance policies, the volunteer must be over 30 years old and hold a full clean UK driving licence. It is an important role for the business and we welcome any persons who are motivated to perform the role. Relief Delivery Driver/Helper

Food Train is a registered charity and voluntary organisation which supports and assists older people in the community. The grocery shopping and delivery service is one of the vital services we offer in Dumfries. We are looking for dedicated volunteers to assist with the delivery of the groceries. We currently deliver food shopping on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and would require volunteers to be available from 9.30am until around 3pm depending on the size of the delivery run. A relief driver or helper could be called on short notice to ask if they are available to go out on a delivery run. Drivers will be expected to take responsibility for the daily checking and minor maintenance of the vehicle. They will need to complete a log sheet with mileages, check for damage, check air in tyres, fill with fuel and top up oil and water levels when required. They will also be in charge of loading the vehicle and should aim to follow a fuel-efficient route at all times. The driver will also be expected to help carry shopping boxes into the customer’s house with the helper. The delivery helper assists the driver in loading the van and carrying the shopping into the customer’s house, but has a lead role with the customer interface. Helpers are responsible for collecting the cost of the shopping and the Food Train delivery charge from the customers along with completing relevant paperwork. The driver and helper should stay together at all times in the customer’s house and drivers are expected to witness all cash handling carried out by the helper. Helpers should be good at handling money and the basic arithmetic of addition (shopping plus delivery charge) and calculating change due. Both Drivers and Helpers should have a tolerant nature and have empathy and understanding of the challenges facing older people living alone.
