Description

Would you like to help save lives? Do you enjoy driving and own a 4-wheel drive vehicle with tow bar, a horse or livestock trailer or a medium/large van with good ventilation? If so, we’d like to hear from you.

We are the British Hen Welfare Trust and since 2005 we have been saving and rehoming ex-caged laying hens throughout the United Kingdom. Working closely with leaders in the egg industry, we designed and developed the original rehoming model for ex-caged hens, and so far have found homes for over 960,000 hens to date.

We’re looking for volunteer drivers to load and transport hens from commercial farms (assisted by other BHWT volunteers), and deliver them to our rehoming sites. Each rehoming site conducts approximately 10 events a year which are generally held on weekends.

Organisation aims and objectives

Since 2005 the British Hen Welfare Trust has been rescuing hens from slaughter and rehoming them as pets throughout the UK. Working with farmers in the egg industry, we designed and developed the original rehoming model and have rehomed over 850,000 hens to date. Here’s what we do in a nutshell… or eggshell: - Annually we save over 60,000 hens from slaughter by finding and placing them in caring pet homes. - Hen adoptions are conducted at our 50+ rehoming sites around the country under the watchful eyes of our 1000+ volunteers. - We collaborate with veterinary institutions and government agencies to improve hen health and welfare, in both the domestic and commercial sectors. - We educate consumers as to how the choices they make in the supermarket affects hen welfare and the British egg industry. - We provide educational materials to schools to teach children about farming, hens and animal welfare. - We actively support and promote our great British free-range farmers.
