Description

Sunflower Garden works with children and young people aged 5 to 18 based in Edinburgh who are affected by drug and/or alcohol use within their family. We understand that the support we provide needs to be specific to the needs of each child/young person and so we offer a range of tailored therapeutic support such as: Counselling (including art and play therapy), 1-to-1 therapeutic support and group work. We are looking for volunteer counsellors to join our team.

Organisation aims and objectives

Simpson House offers various services working with children, families and individuals affected by drug use. Simpson House Drugs Counselling Service provides drugs counselling to people using drugs or affected by drugs. Counsellors also see clients at HMP Edinburgh. The counselling service is accrediated by the Brithish Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists. Sunflower Garden works with children within the city of Edinburgh who are affected by drug or alcohol misuse in their families. The service is child friendly and child focussed in its work, providing a range of therapeutic services to children aged from 5 to 14 years old. The project aims to build resilience in children through improving self esteem, increasing confidence, and helping children to find ways of coping with their situations through expressing and managing their worries, feelings and fears.

Restrictions

Experience required: Must be qualified to at least 2nd year postgraduate level with 50 hours of counselling. A strong awareness of own emotions, with responsibility for and commitment to ensuring own self–care. It is preferred but not essential that you have an insight of, or experience of, working within substance use field and also have knowledge on attachment and child development.
