Description

Volunteers will provide witnesses with support and information to assist them with the practical and emotional impact of attending court and giving evidence. This may specifically involve providing basic information on court procedures and layout; undertake court familiarisation visits; listen/ empathise with concerns/ anxieties; liaise with appropriate personnel and assess witnesses’ needs for
post-trial support and referral as required. Volunteers should be reliable, sensitive and non-judgemental and have confidence to offer help to distressed or vulnerable service users and have respect for the formality of the Court and the Court users.

Organisation aims and objectives

To provide emotional and practical support to victims of crime and antisocial behaviour throughout the Scottish Borders. Information on Criminal Justice System, Remote Reporting, Criminal Injuries Compensation and signposting to other agencies.

Experience required: Good oral and written communication skills.The ability to listen non-judgementally to victims and their families who may be in emotional distress. An anti-discriminatory approach to working with people from all sections of the community. The capacity to learn about the criminal justice system and understand the victims’ journey. An awareness of confidentiality issues.Good time management skills. Flexibility may be required to cover additional court days outwith the regular Tues/Thurs pattern.
Travel details: Witness Service offers their service in all court buildings. We are looking for volunteers for Selkirk and Jedburgh Sheriff Courts. Travel expenses and refreshments are reimbursed

Training details: Volunteers will complete the initial compulsory foundation training and shadowing period and will receive ongoing training and support throughout their time with the Witness Service.
