Now more than ever, a friendly face or a supportive phone chat can make a world of difference. ‘Fancy a Blether’ volunteers help to reduce loneliness and social isolation for local people in Midlothian.
Volunteers are matched with their ‘Fancy a Blether’ partner to provide a friendly contact once a week. Volunteers initially make phone contact with a view to meeting face-to-face to support the person to access services and activities in their community. With each call or meeting, volunteers can expect to feel the immediate impact of donating their time as they help to reduce loneliness and social isolation for local people in Midlothian. This role can be flexible around your work or family commitments as the schedule is mutually agreed with the person you are supporting. The Volunteer Befriender helps residents who feel isolated or unable to get out very easily on their own by giving time on a one-to-one basis to help a person maintain social contact, provide companionship, and reduce loneliness and social isolation. Volunteer befrienders build a positive relationship with an individual and visit them on a regular basis in their own flat. This could mean spending some time with a person for an hour or two every week/fortnight, we also encourage getting out and about for a coffee or short walk. Generally, befrienders are there to chat and get to know someone, have fun. Support the person to continue with existing interests, whilst encouraging them to embark on new activities.

Kincorth Community Centre Hub Volunteers

The Kincorth Community Centre Hub has great volunteer opportunities to assist with a range of activities at the Hub. Volunteer roles include supporting our busy community cafe, which has rapidly taken off, we currently open 9.30 -2.30, but our aim is to run a breakfast and supper club, as well as have the cafe open for activities in the evening. We have a diverse community that has a lot to offer e.g.: art classes/exercise group/dance class/music lessons and we are always open to new ideas-we are more or less a blank canvass. Excellent support and relevant guidance is provided to all volunteers. Level 2 Hygiene Certificate will be offered to those who want to volunteer/cook in the café. Any other training would be reviewed and provided if proved relevant. A fantastic, enjoyable opportunity to volunteer and help make a real difference for people and the community. Older People Befriender

The Food Train operates throughout Scotland, supporting older people in local communities to remain living in their own home, as independently as possible. If you like chatting, meeting people and getting out and about this could be the role for you! Our volunteer befrienders take part in home visits, one on one excursions and sometimes group trips. We have a large number of older people in Falkirk experiencing loneliness and isolation who would love the companionship of another person who can visit on a regular basis. The role involves: - Visiting an older person in their own home to spend time chatting, listening and discussing various topics; playing a game; doing a puzzle; cooking... Whatever interests you both! We will always try to match you with someone we think you would be compatible with. - There's always the option to go out on walks or outings. - Visits will be arranged in advance and may be at a regular time every day/week/fortnight. - We ask that you update staff after visits and complete monitoring and reviewing requirements. - Informing staff of any concerns, accidents, incidents or complaints. - There's always the option to attend volunteer meetings, training and social events throughout the year.

Home Visiting / Family Group / Telephone Befriending Volunteer

You must be a parent or have carer experience. Good communication skills; friendly and empathetic. Volunteers will be supported by a volunteer co-ordinator and will have regular support and supervision, as well as ongoing training. Home-Start Wigtownshire is a voluntary organisation in which volunteers offer regular support, friendship and practical help to families with young children who are facing personal challenges, helping to prevent family crisis or breakdown. Home-Start Wigtownshire volunteers support families in the following ways: Home Visiting ; Family Group ; Telephone Befriender Offering support, friendship and practical help. This might include help with budgeting, meal planning, attending appointments, accessing services etc. Visiting families in their own homes, or by helping out at our weekly family groups, or providing remote support via a telephone/video call where the dignity and identity of each individual can be respected and protected through non-judgemental, compassionate and confidential support. Reassuring families that difficulties in bringing up children are not unusual. Emphasising the positive aspects of family life and positive parenting. Developing a relationship with the family in which time can be shared and an understanding developed. Encouraging parents’ strengths and emotional well being for the ultimate benefit of their own children.
