Description

This is an exciting opportunity for young people aged 18-25 with type 1 diabetes to be trained and supported to become peer support volunteers. This opportunity will provide a safe space for the person you are supporting to talk about their feelings, share experiences and crucially, realise they aren’t alone. You will help them overcome barriers and increase self-management confidence by talking to somebody who has faced similar challenges. This opportunity is open to any young person aged 18-25 from across Scotland. You will be given support and training in 1-2-1 support and working with people in this way. This is part of a peer support project that aims to connect people on an individual level, a community level and at a national level. For this project you will work with your buddy to decide on how you will communicate with each other. What you'll be doing...
Come to project activities and meetings with the other peer supporters over Zoom to help design and oversee the project.
Support 2 or 3 individuals with type 1 diabetes who are attending clinics. Be prepared to support them through some difficulties they may be having and explore their diabetes. This could involve setting goals and working through specific issues.
Talk to clinic staff about the development of the project with your fellow buddies and youth coordinator. Clinic staff will be active partners in this project, and you will be able to work with them on how best they can support young people with type 1.
Assist the Youth Coordinator in gathering information from the people you are buddying.
Take part in evaluation of your time on the project
