Description

As a member of the HMS Unicorn Collections Team, you will provide an invaluable role in improving knowledge associated with the collections and fostering their accessibility. This role provides an opportunity to get experience within a museum environment and to learn about collections management, care, and storage. You will also get the chance to learn how to use Axiell Collections Management Systems.

As part of this role, you will be provided with ongoing training opportunities and will develop an excellent attention to detail, good organisational and communication skills, and computer literacy. As a member of the HMS Unicorn volunteer team, you will also get the chance to meet other people and be invited to different group social events throughout the year. You can also become involved in other areas of the ship's life including maintenance, engagement events, and visitor services.

Organisation aims and objectives

The Unicorn Preservation Society is a charity registered in Scotland who preserve and conserve HMS Unicorn, the most original old ship in the world. The purpose of the organisation is to ensure a sustainable future for the vessel, provide education relating to the ship and maritime heritage, and to provide recreational facilities for the community.

We would ask for a minimum time commitment of 3 hours per fortnight, However this is flexible and can be adapted to the individual. The opportunity is weekly and ongoing.

Restrictions

Experience required: You should have an interest in museums and heritage, and a desire to learn about collections within a museum environment. No previous experience is required for this role.
Travel details: For this position, the opportunity will take place at our address which is HMS Unicorn, Victoria Dock, Dundee, DD1 3BP
Minimum age: 17

Support

Training details: Induction training will be provided by our VEL Officer to the organisation and workplace. Specific ongoing training will be provided by our Collections Intern, on areas of collections management, collections care, and collections databases.
