Bridge to Freedom Volunteer

Description

Across all three sites, we are looking for volunteers to support the running of the group, and volunteers to befriend attendees on a 1-2-1 basis. The group has Christ at the centre, and group volunteers need to have a Christian faith with a church connection. For those engaging in 1-2-1 support, a strong Christian faith is required, ideally with lived experience of addiction or experience of working in this area. All volunteer should help attendees feel welcomed and comfortable, whilst also maintaining appropriate boundaries, e.g. chatting and contributing to the group discussion.

Bethany Christian Trust is a national charity whose mission is to relieve the suffering and meet the long term needs of homeless and vulnerable people in Scotland. We share a big vision – to work together towards the aim of Ending Homelessness in Scotland. We support people in a broad range of ways including: housing, education and employment, addiction recovery, emotional well-being, street outreach, community integration, offending reduction and social support

Restrictions

Experience required: This role requires all attendees, including volunteers, to be vulnerable and open. Volunteers should be comfortable with this, and have healthily processed any trauma or experiences that may be touched upon in such a group. This is to ensure that a) the focus remains on the clients, and b) that volunteers are able to support clients using the context of their experience.
Travel details: There are currently three Bridge to Freedom groups in Edinburgh, their locations are below; Tron Kirk, Moredun (more details on request) Thursdays, 7-9pm; Gorebridge Parish Church (more details on request), Fridays 2-4pm; Leith (more details on request) Monday 2-4pm.

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Regular volunteers are entitled to claim up to £3.60 per day for travel expenses (£4.50 if multiple buses are required).
Training details: The volunteer will receive an induction with necessary training, and additional training as required and appropriate.
Support: Wheelchair Access/Disabled Access Toilet

Family friends work directly with families, coming alongside and giving support to parents and children when they need it most, making sure they feel less isolated. Safe Families is a charity that works with 35+ local authorities around the UK. Volunteer Mentor (Midlothian)

Could you offer an hour per week, to support a young adult in Midlothian? "Grandmentors" is an award winning mentoring programme, matching Volunteer Mentors who have a range of life skills and experience, with young adults aged 16-26 who are care experienced or who face a range of other life challenges or barriers. Grandmentors launched in Midlothian in 2023. Our Volunteer Mentors help young adults to navigate the transition into adulthood, guiding and helping them learn valuable life skills such as managing their finances, accessing Employment, Education and Training, and supporting their physical and mental health and wellbeing. Normally our Volunteer Mentors are aged 50+ and have skills and life experience to offer. However, if you are younger than 50 and feel you could offer time to support a younger adult, we would love to hear from you too! It is important that you have good people and communication skills, patience, and can offer a regular commitment of at least an hour per week (or a couple of hours per fortnight). Full training and support will be given throughout your volunteering experience as a Mentor! We will also re-imburse any volunteer expenses costs that you incur. Interested in finding out more? Volunteer Buddies

ADA-Alcohol & Drugs Action have opportunities for Volunteer Buddies to support people who require this service in their recovery journey. People who have had problems with substance abuse often say they can lose touch with friends and colleagues, as well as losing their confidence in social situations. Buddies aim to help people build up their confidence again by supporting the person to get out and about to rediscover old interests or find new ones. Once trained, our Buddies are matched with an appropriate client and alongside the Drugs Worker; they will jointly agree a plan which will enable the Buddy to support the client in their recovery. The specific plan agreed will be led by the needs of each individual client and could typically include the Buddy accompanying the client to social events, leisure activities or to appointments with other organisations. As well as Volunteer Buddies we also have a range of other volunteer opportunities such as Volunteer Complementary Therapists, Creative Group Volunteers, Mini Bus Driver, Volunteer Gardener and Volunteer Music Group Assistant. Young Persons Mentor

Social isolation and loneliness is a huge issue in the Moray area. As a volunteer mentor you will be matched with a young person who you would spend regular time on a 1:1 basis, working towards building a trusting relationship. Volunteers take part in activities that is of interest to your young person, such as cooking, sports, and crafts. You can also introduce them to new activities to help them learn new skills and develop new interests. Through having a mentor, a young person can develop confidence and self-belief to achieve their life goals. As a volunteer you will gain practical experience of spending time with children and increase your knowledge about the issues affecting young people. You will meet a range of new people and be filled with a sense of satisfaction, knowing that you have helped make a difference in a child’s life.
