  • One-off volunteering, Board/trustee role

The Edinburgh, Lothians and Borders Branch of the RAF Association is looking for volunteers to support various volunteer roles within the branch i.e. Committee/Trustees, Welfare, Fundraising, developing partnerships with RAF Air Cadets, RAF Reserves and Armed Forces Breakfast Clubs amongst others. If you are not interested in Committee/Trustee roles, non-trustee volunteers can provide valuable support relating to the above. Current or previous service in the Royal Air Force is not required; some roles within the branch require membership of RAFA; and although encouraged, membership of RAFA is not not a pre-requisite to volunteering your time, skills, experience and commitment.

Organisation aims and objectives

The Royal Air Forces Association (or RAF Association), is a membership organisation and registered charity that provides welfare support to the RAF Family. Receiving no government contributions, our work is completely funded by the generosity of our members and through vital donations from our supporters to the Wings Appeal. We assist around 50 RAF veterans or their widows/widowers to lead safe, independent lives in our sheltered and supported housing.

Frequency and commitment details

Although the Branch Committee/Trustees meet monthly and there are general meetings for members of the branch quarterly. Face to face meetings take place in Edinburgh - however the branch has been using Zoom for meetings recently.

As we say "we can only do what we can do, when we can do it". Volunteers can choose to commit what time they can spare; obviously some roles require more time than others.
Experience required: Wide range of skills required to support - charity governance/committee work, Fundraising, Events, health & safety, Data Protection, partnership working, team working, media/pr/communications, empathy with beneficiaries and members. Previous armed forces/RAF service not required; only an interest in what we do to support the serving RAF and its Veterans (and dependents).
Travel details: The Committee/Trustees are more and more using technology to communicate with each other and their members & partners. Therefore travel to meetings is kept to a minimum; although if volunteers are taking part in fundraising and other events (i.e. Air Shows); some travel will be required.
Minimum age: 18

Expenses paid: Yes
Expenses details: Branch Volunteers may be eligible to claim out of pocket expenses incurred for authorised volunteering activities. As well as reasonable out of pocket expenses, some Committee/Trustee roles require membership of the the RAF Association as part of Association rules. In these cases branches 'may' by mutual agreement offer to pay for membership for the first year and thereafter on an individual basis. The branch does not cover expenses for hospitality, fines for parking, speeding or other related offences. Receipts/itemised bills will be required to support claims for expenses. Any volunteer finding difficulty covering expenses up-front, should contact the Branch Treasurer.
Taster available: Yes
Taster details: Prospective volunteers are free to speak to a member of the branch Committee/Trustees, join us at a meeting or an event as a guest.
Training details: The Edinburgh, Lothians and Borders Branch of RAFA does have a 'Volunteering Policy' which will cover what a Branch Volunteer is, training, support, expenses etc. A copy of this policy will be shared with volunteer enquirers.
