Cancer Research UK
Volunteer in our shops
Our shop volunteers are helping us beat cancer right now.
In 2019/20, 14,000 volunteers gave 3.1 million hours of their time and sold items totalling £15million. These funds are helping us start new clinical trials and research treatments as we speak.
If you volunteer at a Cancer Research UK shop, you too could make a real difference to what we can achieve. Nothing we do would be possible without amazing volunteers like you.
You’ll also gain valuable skills to help develop your CV and experience. And you’ll volunteer alongside a wonderful team of passionate, friendly people who will support you every step of the way.
Volunteering is open to everyone and no experience is required. So, if you’re looking for a new challenge, we’d love to hear from you.
What do shop volunteers do?
Volunteering in our shops is varied, exciting and rewarding. No two days are the same and you have the chance to flex different skills regularly. There are always new opportunities to keep you engaged and help you grow and develop in your role.
While this list is not exhaustive, it gives you a flavour of some of the typical tasks in our charity shops:
Serving customers, taking payments and providing good all-round customer service
Sorting through donated items and pricing stock
Working on window and shop displays
Keeping the shop tidy, clean and well organised
Interacting with the general public
Following new health, safety and social distancing measures
You don’t need any experience to volunteer
You just need to be motivated, hardworking and enjoy being part of a team. There’ll be a full induction as well as ongoing training opportunities to make sure you’re fully confident and able to excel in your role.
Why should I volunteer?
Volunteering brings a wealth of benefits, both personal and professional.
Every volunteer hour you donate means we can sell 6 items and make £20 of income. So, if you volunteer for a 7-hour day, this can generate £140. That means that every day you volunteer, you’ll be raising more funds to beat cancer.
You’ll gain important skills that are hugely valued in the workplace such as teamwork, communication and using your initiative.
You can boost your CV by working towards an NVQ in Retail with Derby College and we'll provide you with a reference.
It will allow you to get involved in your local community and to meet new friends.
Our friendly CRUK team will be there to support you all the way – offering guidance and helping you build your confidence.
It’s fun – you’ll gain real satisfaction from volunteering alongside our warm, friendly shop volunteers who will make you feel right at home.
The minimum age for volunteering in our shops is 18. If you’re aged between 16 -18 you may still be able to volunteer in our shops, but you must be on a recognised scheme, for example, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The No 1 Be-friending Agency
What are our aims?
The No.1 Befriending Agency is a vibrant social enterprise that aims to reduce loneliness and isolation.
We welcome people from all backgrounds to join our team where you will make a positive impact in your community and support vulnerable adults (aged 18+). By volunteering with No.1, you will support us in our aims of building service users' confidence and enhancing their quality of life. You will also help develop the dynamic of the organisation for service users, strengthening the friendly and inclusive environment that has been created.
In June 2022, we launched our Heritage Project. The project ties in with our aim to reduce the loneliness and isolation of vulnerable people through befriending and is based on the idea that ‘every life is a story’. We are sharing stories, memories and experiences with each other, to encourage the exploration of heritage and promote connectivity in the community.
What does the role involve?
We run virtual events three times a week on Mondays (2-3pm), Wednesday (11am-12pm) and Friday (2-3pm). Our Virtual Walking Tours will take place as part of these events, allowing those who live alone and feel isolated to connect with local areas around Glasgow.
We are looking for enthusiastic and engaging volunteers to lead these sessions. Volunteers will share virtual walking tours, using pictures and descriptions of local areas, stories and landmarks, with service users from the comfort of everyone’s living rooms. Please note, the role does not require doing the walking tour whilst on Zoom. We have resources for you, the volunteer, to take service users on a walking tour that has already been planned. We also welcome volunteers’ own ideas, and would love to host a walking tour planned by you!
Full induction training will be given, with ongoing support meetings from volunteer coordinators. We ask if you can commit to one to four sessions a month (2-8 hours a month including preparation time) to come and lead a walking tour.
For more information, please contact our Volunteer Coordinators on info@befriend.org.uk or 0141 465 6998
The No 1 Be-friending Agency
Are you enthusiastic and motivated? Are you wanting to get involved in supporting in-person events?

We are looking for Event Assistants to help us at events including coffee mornings, reminscing sessions and heritage activities. Support the No.1 Befriending Agency team to reduce loneliness and isolation by helping to facilitate our in-person events.

In order to tackle this loneliness and isolation, we created a befriending service where trained volunteers visit and spend time with isolated older people.
The specific tasks for the role might include:
• Document the event through photos/videos during the event
• Working closely with volunteer coordinators to ensure the event runs smoothly
• Gather quotes from clients and volunteers about their experience during event
• Writing a blog after the event
• Help support clients during the event
• Make tea/coffee for service users
This role is flexible so you can make it work to your schedule. We will publish a programme of events for Maryhill, and you can sign up when it works for you. Events will take place between Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm.
If you are interested please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided. Streetwork
In 2020 Scotland became the first country in the world to offer people free period products. We work with our partners Glasgow City Council to deliver this groundbreaking Act in the city.
Being excluded from basic sanitary and hygiene essentials contributes to the poor mental health and well-being experience of many people. We recognised this, so in 2017 our Period Friendly Project was born and offers free sanitary products to people who are experiencing homelessness. The Project has expanded over the past five years and we now have a presence in over 150 venues around Glasgow city, where people can collect Packs of sanitary towels and tampons. We have period points all across the city, and at the moment are particularly looking for volunteers to cover venues in postcode areas G20, G22 and G45.
Everyone who menstruates deserves access to sanitary products and Period Friendly volunteers help people have a ‘period of dignity’ every month.
Specific tasks:
- Creating Period Packs to distribute to public buildings in Glasgow
- Delivering Period Packs to assigned venues in the city
- Create a warm line of communication with staff at your venues and be easy to contact when their stock needs to be replenished
- Raising awareness of the project in your local community and helping fundraise and collect donations of other items such as underwear and wet wipes.

Cancer Research UK
Volunteer in our shops
This shop needs volunteers on every day of the week.
Serving customers, taking cash and providing good all-round customer service
You can boost your CV by working towards an NVQ in Retail with Derby College, and we'll provide you with a reference.
The minimum age for volunteering in our shops is 18 . If you’re aged between 16 -18 you may still be able to volunteer in our shops, but you must be on a recognised scheme, for example the Duke of Edinburgh

Befriending is a fantastic and rewarding way to make a real difference to the life of someone else. Apart from the personal satisfaction of helping someone, it is also an opportunity to enhance your own life experience and build new skills.
Befrienders MUST have held a full driving licence for at least 2 years and have the use of a smoke free car.
A minimum commitment of 1 year is needed to ensure these goals can be met.
Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life limiting condition that currently affects around 1200 people in Scotland. The Butterfly Trust aspires to improving the quality of life for people affected by Cystic Fibrosis by providing support, promoting people's rights and helping them to live independently.
Our befrienders offer one to one face-to-face support to a young person aged 8 to 18, who has Cystic Fibrosis. Young people living with this condition have a demanding daily treatment regime at home and sometimes experience limitations that can affect their confidence and ability to cope with the challenges of everyday living. They may also be socially isolated because of their condition.
A befriender will meet with the young person for around 3 hours every 1 to 2 weeks, away from the home environment, to build a trusting one to one relationship. A session might simply be an opportunity to chat, eg over a snack or coffee, or may involve a specific activity such as sport or creative/arts. This will allow the young person space and a suitable environment to explore their feelings, discuss their fears, develop life skills and grow in the areas where they may be struggling.
Desirable qualities required include good listening skills, patience and an adaptable attitude.
Training and support is provided; and expenses reimbursed.
After applying you will be asked to complete an application form and to meet with us for a short informal interview. Befrienders will then attend an induction event (expenses paid) and the trust will acquire PVG clearance on their behalf, before being paired up with an appropriate client in the Glasgow area, within a reasonable distance from your home.

Support and Training:
- A comprehensive induction is provided for this role
- In-role training is available – we value our volunteers and want to ensure you are equipped with the skills you need to fulfil your role
What’s in it for me?
For as little as six hours per month, you have the chance to meet new people and be part of an amazing team who are passionate about what they do. Everything we do is about and for people; the people we support, our staff, partners and everyone affected by homelessness. Each individual involved brings their skills and creativity to our work. This is a chance for you to make a real difference to the most vulnerable people within your community and pick up essential skills that are valuable to employers.
Our Expectation:
We need people who care about our client group, are enthusiastic and able to respond flexibly to a role that can sometimes be challenging but brings great rewards and satisfaction.
We need you to be fully committed to Simon Community Scotland’s Mission and Core Values and adhere to our policies/procedures and Code of Practice.
If you are interested please click the ‘apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organization with the contact details provided. You could also check your junk/spam folder on your emails just in case the response is there. If that doesn’t work out then please feel free to contact Volunteer Glasgow at info@volunteerglasgow.org
