Home-Start Glasgow North
Home-Start Glasgow North and North Lanarkshire has a great opportunity for people who have experience parenting or working with children and families! Our volunteers provide practical and emotional support to families with children under the age of 5 who are experiencing difficulties.
Home-Start Volunteers are often parents themselves or have experience of the challenges of young family life. They choose to share their time, friendship, skills and experience because they understand the demands and stresses on young families. We match each family with the right volunteer for them and the volunteer commits to support 2-3 hours per week.
Families can find it hard to cope for all different reasons - illness or disability, postnatal health, lack of family support, past addictions or asylum seeking families new to the country. Volunteers support parents as they learn to cope, improve their confidence and build better lives for themselves and their children. Simple things help families move on and become more resilient - a listening ear, getting out of the house, joining groups, a cuppa and a chat, friendship and fun.
Home-Start Glasgow North was founded in 2001 and expanded in 2017 to include the satellite office in North Lanarkshire. For many years, we've worked across communities to provide support for families with young children who are facing difficulties. We have long-term experience in family support and are established as one of the leading charities working in this field in the community. Our impact within the local communities we serve is far reaching, aiding reduction in solation and loneliness, improving mental health of adults and children, improving educational attainment, building healthy relationships, supporting more nurturing environments and improving the wellbeing of parents with, or at risk of, mental ill health during the perinatal period (during pregnancy and until infant reaches one year old). With our focus on empowerment and resilience, we assist families to become self-reliant, confident and connected.
Volunteers join us for many reasons, but all share the same motivation - the desire to help others.
No special qualifications are necessary to volunteer with Home-Start but Family Support Volunteers must be a parent, have parenting experience, or have experience working with children and families. Family Support Volunteers will be matched with a family and will then offer support by visiting them at home, in the community (pre-Covid times) or connecting by phone and online video chat (post-Covid) each week. We expect the type of support Family Support Volunteers may provide to include: helping families to engage in play with children, supporting larger families to have more time with individual children, supporting families to engage in new activities or providing practical support to families at home.
All volunteers are given a FREE 5 session training course to ensure that they are fully prepared and confident in the role. Courses are run 4 times throughout the year - next course starts week in April. Participants will learn about health and wellbeing, child development, attachment, child protection, community projects and a number of key areas of our specific services.
We are looking for family support volunteers to support families in the home and out in the community 2-3 hours during the working week, the time is flexible to suit your availability. We select, train and support volunteers who:
•Offer support, friendship, and practical assistance
•Provide encouragement of parents’ strengths and emotional well-being for the ultimate benefit of the children
•Encourage families to widen their network of relationships and to use the support and services available within the community effectively.
All volunteers undergo an enhanced criminal records check, at no cost to volunteers.
If you're interested, please click the ‘apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided. You could also check your junk/spam folder on your emails just in case the response is there. If that doesn’t work out then please feel free to contact Volunteer Glasgow on info@volunteerglasgow.org.
The No 1 Be-friending Agency
We are looking to establish a new The No.1 Befriending Agency Advisory Board initially for a 6-month period as we work through a reflection and review process and develop some new plans for the next 3 years of The No.1 Befriending Agency
Role Description
2024 is a 'pause and review' year for The No.1 Befriending Agency. In the seven years we've been doing what we do, so much has changed.
Securing finance to sustain our social enterprise on a year-by-year basis has become increasingly difficult. The Independent (July 2024): reports evidence that people are becoming lonelier and in facet ‘lonely deaths’ epidemic is sweeping the UK. We need to undergo a period of reflection.
We want to specifically look at three key areas:
How we establish financial resilience to do more and forward plan with confidence
How we develop the organisation while bringing joy to our volunteers and team
How we maximise and market available resource to amplify our mission
With this in mind, we are looking to establish a new Advisory Board to help us. This will initially be for a 6-month period as we work through a review process and develop some new plans for the next 3 years of The No.1 Befriending Agency. It is a voluntary position and most meetings can be held online so that we can respect your time and get the most value from your commitment to us.
This opportunity is open to all, and we encourage anyone who has an interest in what we are all about to ignore that pesky Imposter Syndrome voice and put yourself forward.
We have no idea what kind of response we will get, but please know we may not be able to offer an Advisory Board position to all who apply. We envisage the Advisory Board will comprise around 5 to 6 people. We will aim to curate a group that is as varied and diverse as possible, with the aim of assembling a collective that we believe will deliver the maximum benefit to The No.1 Befriending Agency
If you are interested please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered).

Arkbound Foundation
Founded in 2017, The Arkbound Foundation is the only independent charity in the UK that is concerned with improving accessibility and diversity within both publishing and journalism. We are a registered charity in England and Wales (Charity Number 1173072), and in Scotland (SC049523), with offices in Bristol and Glasgow.
We are a small organisation and are now seeking to widen and diversify our trustee board. In particular, we would be very interested if you have experience in business development, previously being a trustee of an organisation, and working with/for people who come from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds.
The purpose of a trustee is to generally oversee that a charity delivers its mission (in the interests of the general public) and that it functions well. Being a trustee is an important volunteer role that has a great responsibility, as well as unmatched opportunities to develop insights into high-level strategy, delivery of charitable work, management skills and transferable knowledge to a range of other careers.
The recommended minimum hourly commitment of a trustee is 8 hours per month; however, this is flexible and many of our existing trustees do less, whilst some choose to do more. Meetings take place at least every two months and participation can be remote.
What's in it for the volunteer?
We play a vital role in expanding publishing to a more diverse range of voices and have made a unique difference to British publishing by providing access to less orthodox opinions and views on British social and political issues. By taking on the role of trustee, you would be helping manage an organisation that is making a significant difference to this field of work.
If you are interested please click the ‘apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). The coordinator will then contact you by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact the organisation with the contact details provided. You could also check your junk/spam folder on your emails just in case the response is there. If that doesn’t work out then please feel free to contact Volunteer Glasgow on 0141 226 3431.

Marie Curie
We're looking for volunteers with good conversational and listening skills to support a local care home in the West End.
Our volunteers will be assigned to David Cargill House care home and will speak to staff at the start of each shift to identify a resident who might benefit from the companionship that day.
We know that living with a life-limiting illness can be isolating, and for residents in a care home this can be a particularly difficult experience. We are working with the staff at Riverside House to provide volunteers to visit residents who might not have any family members living nearby, to spend time with them and help them to take part in activities around the home where appropriate.
You might be reading to someone, chatting about their memories or helping the person you are with to engage in other activities going on in the care home. This is likely to be taking place in the early afternoon, and you will be part of an exciting new project we are trialing to make sure people who live in a care home are supported and provided with companionship on days when they don't always have a visitor.
This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys meeting new people and has great conversational skills. This is also an opportunity to be part of a new approach to supporting care home residents.
If you are interested, please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. If you have not heard back after 5 working days, the first step is to contact Carly at carly@myacademicfamily.org.uk. Maryhill Burgh Hall Trust
Want to make a difference in a local charity? We are a community organisation with an impressive building serving the local community. We are looking for an Honorary Treasurer to support our board.
Maryhill Burgh Halls Trust (MBHT) was established in 2004 as a registered charity in northwest Glasgow to save the Victorian Burgh Halls from demolition and bring the Halls back into community use. MBHT raised over £9 million to regenerate the building and it reopened in 2012 as a multipurpose space including an event venue, office spaces to let, a local heritage site including a museum and exhibition space and collection of artefacts as well as a lovely in-house café. MBHT continues to look for ways to engage and involve the local community to promote local culture, arts and heritage and highlight the excellent community facility of the historic Burgh Halls. The Burgh Halls mean more to us than just bricks and mortar - they are a source of identity, pride and belonging and rich in history of the area.
The Board of Trustees is now seeking someone to give guidance and oversight to its financial management. The position of Honorary Treasurer is a voluntary one and is likely to require a time input of 6-8 hours per month. The role would suit an accountant who has retired or is working part-time.
The Honorary Treasurer would be most welcome to join the board of Trustees and participate in the overall oversight of the Trust’s mission and operations, though that would not be an essential requirement of the role.
It is proposed that the Treasurer:
• Advise/chairs the Finance Committee
• Oversees financial reporting and advises on appropriate presentation
• Oversees (and where necessary, produces) budgets and budget forecasts

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Caseworkers also sign-post clients onto specialist local services for advice on benefits, housing, mental health, debt, finding work etc.
The essential part of the role is interacting with clients, so you may be visiting clients or doing this virtually. As part of your local branch you might have access to an office, but many volunteers are based at home.
What does this role involve?
• Contacting clients and arranging to meet them at a mutually convenient time either face-to-face or remotely
• Liaising with clients and completing a form to assess their circumstances including financial information

• Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA remembering that anyone you meet could be a potential client, volunteer or fundraiser
• Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the
Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)
What can you gain from this volunteering role?
• Support people in your community with a military background
• Use your skills, knowledge and life experience to benefit others
• Support and friendship from your local SSAFA branch and the wider SSAFA community
• Experience, training and skills that you can highlight on your CV and in job interviews

Marie Curie
We're looking for volunteers with good conversational and listening skills to support a local care home in Parkhead.
Our volunteers will be assigned to a Riverside House care home and will speak to staff at the start of each shift to identify a resident who might benefit from the companionship that day.
This is likely to be taking place in the early afternoon, and you will be part of an exciting new project we are trialling to make sure people who live in a care home are supported and provided with companionship on days when they don't always have a visitor.
This is an ideal role for someone who enjoys meeting new people and has great conversational skills. This is also an opportunity to be part of a new approach to supporting care home residents. We will be starting this project at a care home in Stobhill but will be adding more locations as we go.
Is there any training?
Before becoming a Companion, you’ll get extensive training to make sure you’re ready, and we’ll give you ongoing support throughout your time volunteering.
The difference you make as a Companion
Everyone’s different, but the people we support say these are the biggest ways in which having a Companion volunteer to support them helps.
If you are interested please click the ‘Apply’ button below (available when logged in and registered). You will then be contacted by the coordinator by email or phone call. Nemo Arts
Founded in 1998, Nemo Arts (Formerly Theatre Nemo) has been at the forefront of providing high-quality, participatory arts activities that support people in recovery from poor mental health, for 25 years. We have pioneered work with children and families of prisoners, young carers, adults in psychiatric units, prisoners, and people in communities. We deliver a range of services using artistic disciplines including music, drama, and visual art. Research has shown that participation in the arts improves the mental health and wellbeing of participants, whatever the current state of their mental health. Our work helps people achieve positive outcomes such as increasing confidence and self-esteem, providing opportunities to increase creative and life skills, and reducing isolation. The creative arts have the potential to improve the quality of life and give people a new positive identity.
Our mission is to support people in recovery from poor mental health, and we aim to:
• Improve people’s mental health and wellbeing
• Improve knowledge and understanding of mental illness in the community
• Reduce stigma and isolation associated with poor mental health
The people who use our service are adults experiencing poor mental health, there is a huge spectrum of poor mental health, and all are welcome within our service. The majority, around 80%, of referrals we receive are from NHS Mental Health services. Other referrals are received from Social Work and other 3rd sector services with a small portion of people self-referring to our service.
The Role:
As a trustee, you will be responsible for the charity’s governance and strategy. This includes making sure the charity is appropriately financed, and that Nemo Arts complies with all relevant rules. We expect all trustees to act in the interests of the charity, by applying skill and care in the application of their duties as well as operating in a manner consistent with Nemo Art's purpose.
In practical terms, we ask that trustees attend four board meetings per year, the annual general meeting, and one strategy day per year. There are many other opportunities to be involved in including attending services and events.
Experience Required:
We are recruiting for additional trustees to complement our board, we are also recruiting for a treasurer. As treasurer, you will have good skills and expertise in financial compliance, finance, budgets, forecasting, and income generation. In addition, we would like you to have the ability to scrutinize and present the financial report at our annual general meetings.
Underpinning these requirements are good interpersonal and communication skills, a commitment to working as a team, an understanding of and commitment to our charity’s work, a broader knowledge of trends across the third sector, and the application of those to strategic work.
In return, we can offer the satisfaction of helping fellow citizens overcome barriers in their lives by joining a committed and collaborative board.
Time Commitment:
Our meetings are held every quarter either online or at our offices in Glasgow. They usually start around 1:00 pm and finish around 3:00 pm. Dates are set well in advance.
Ad-hoc meetings take place outside of formal governance, which all trustees are expected to attend.
The time you provide to our charity will be a valuable commitment in helping those who are amongst the most vulnerable across our society.

Volunteers are regularly invited to ongoing developmental training opportunities. These run outside of the 1-3 hours of weekly family support or group support. These are often information workshops from services and supports available in the community, as well as courses applicable to the role. In the past these have included workshops and trainings on keeping energy costs low, signposting families to benefits and supports, gender violence, first aid, Book Bug in the home, perinatal mental health and trauma informed parenting. Additional trainings and events are not mandatory but these are a great way for volunteers to catch up with the rest of the Home-Start “family”, so please aim to get involved in them if possible.
All volunteers undergo an enhanced criminal records check, at no cost to volunteers.

The Mentor Manager and Coordinator role is flexible, combining good communication, networking and administrative skills with organisation and people management. You’ll work with a cohort of established Volunteers’, along with their ‘nominated point of contact’, to ensure we provide the best experience for our service users and get the best out of our active Volunteers’, enabling them to fulfil their roles as required. We are looking for a commitment of 2-3 hours per week.

You will have good people skills, a good understanding of IT and online management systems and enjoy organising. Parent to Parent is the National Autistic Society’s award-winning UK wide confidential emotional support helpline which is provided over the phone by trained volunteers, who are all parents of autistic children and adults. The volunteers all have personal experience of autism and the impact it has on their own families. They are there to give parents and carers the opportunity to talk through any issues, feelings or problems they’re experiencing. They can suggest helpful strategies, signpost them to other sources of information and support, or just provide a non-judgmental listening ear. Volunteers provide this from their own home.
All volunteers must be a parent or primary carer of an autistic child or adult.
What you will be doing
Calling parents and carers of autistic children and adults who have contacted the Parent to Parent Emotional Support Helpline
Providing emotional support and a non-judgemental listening ear to other parents and carers
Signposting parents, when appropriate, to information and advice services via email

You will get to meet the inspirational faces of community groups across the UK and immerse yourself in their work; use your existing skills in a rewarding fashion whilst developing new ones; guide members to become more inclusive; network with other like-minded individuals helping grassroots sports groups survive; and so much more. Our volunteers say that making a positive difference to our members is what they most enjoy about volunteering at Sported.
What will I do as a Sported volunteer?
You'll use your professional skills and lived experience to help groups overcome operational challenges, become better equipped for the future, and tackle inequality in sport.
Most of our roles are quite flexible and work around your schedule. We do our best to only share opportunities we think are relevant to you. With most of our volunteering support being delivered digitally, it’s even easier to get started supporting members across our network.

Home-based volunteering, Suitable for groups
At Nourish, our new project looks at researching the ‘British restaurants’ government initiative of the 1940s to develop a Public Dining concept that will support local communities today.
British Restaurants were created to provide a hot, healthy, and cheap meal (9p equivalent to £1.50 today) to those who needed it such as those who had homes destroyed by bombings, ran out of food rations, were desperate for support and a place to socialise and to feel a part of a community. By 1943 there was more than 2,000 restaurants serving 500,000 meals a day. Restaurants were set up by local councils in safe spaces from town halls to local churches, they also featured artwork to make the space engaging and joyful- not just a simple soup kitchen but a proud place for community.
We want individuals from all backgrounds, anywhere in Scotland, with a range of skills and abilities to join us on researching this forgotten history!
We are also interested in learning from international examples of state-subsidized dining experiences as further inspiration for our framework of Public Diners. Our current community researchers have found examples all over the world such as: Milk Bars (Poland), Hawker Centres (Singapore), Langar’s (Sikh Gurdwara), Peoples Commune Kitchens (China) and many more.
This is a mostly at home role, where volunteers can access online collections and archives for anything relating to British Restaurants in Scotland. Volunteers are encouraged, if able, to visit local museums, archives, and libraries for this research also. We will provide support and training for volunteers for accessing these materials.
The role also includes interviewing members of the public who may have visited/ used these restaurants during World War Two and after. We will also be interviewing individuals who also used international examples of state subsidised restaurants. This will involve the actual interviewing but recording and transcribing the session. We will also provide support and training (through a separate group) on this. This means that occasionally a volunteer may need to travel to interviewing locations. Volunteers will be reimbursed for travel and related costs, this will be further explained during onboarding. Volunteers can also be involved with outreach strategies to find interviewees.
All these resources and materials will be used to create a touring exhibition on British Restaurants as evidence and inspiration to how they would work today; Public Diners. Volunteers also have the opportunity to assist in the curation of this exhibition.
This is a great opportunity for those interested in advancing their academic journey or career in the heritage sector or even if you are interested in local history!
For more information about the project and the type of research we are looking for please visit our website: https://www.nourishscotland.org/projects/public-diners/
