volunteering opportunities
Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland
We currently have around 50 shops/ community hubs across Scotland. Our shops and hubs help us raise funds so we can provide our services to the people who need us. Every one of our stores relies on a team of volunteers to help run it and support our staff. Quite simply, we cannot provide our services or raise funds without the amazing support of our volunteers. The time, support and the work they do is vital to us and the people we help. By helping out in one of our stores, you can make a difference to people and their families in Scotland who are isolated, scared or anxious about their condition.
MCR Pathways - Clacks
The MCR Pathways programme was founded in 2007. In 2018, the programme began expanding across Scotland with the Young Clackmannanshire Talent (YCT) programme launching in 2019. YCT is helping young people find, grow and use their talent throughout Clackmannanshire. When one person mentors, two lives are changed.
Volunteer mentors spend one hour a week listening to and encouraging their young person. The only qualification you need to be a mentor is the desire to help. Young people are matched with a mentor based on their personalities, interests and career aspirations. All young people are different and have different needs, so it’s important that mentors come from all walks of life. Mentors are role models, who make a life-changing difference to young people. Additionally, mentoring has been shown to make a powerful and positive impact on those who give their time and support.
If you are interested in spending one hour a week with a local young person, assisting them to realise their aspirations, MCR will provide all the support and training you require!

Save the Children
Our Save the Children Shops help raise lots of money for children living in the UK and in 120 countries worldwide. It’s always lovely chatting to our customers about the fabulous items we sell and telling them about the fantastic work that Save the Children does. You'll be taking in, sorting, steaming and pricing donations, rolling up your sleeves in the backroom as well as being on the shop floor.
Serving customers with a smile is so important. You’ll be using the till (don't worry, we'll show you how) and handling money. And when people come in to donate items you'll also be completing the Gift Aid forms that let their donations help us even more.
It’s really important that our window and shop displays look appealing so people keep visiting our shops. So you'll be wielding a duster and vacuum as well as your imagination to make the shop look its best.
It would be ideal if you could volunteer one shift a week, which is about four hours but we're also happy to have more flexible times. No special skills are needed as we’ll show you what to do and we provide all the training you’ll need. But if you have any experience or particular interest tell us, it may come in useful. Lingo Flamingo
CALLING ALL GAELIC SPEAKERS, TUTORS AND ENTHUSIASTS!
Lingo Flamingo are a vibrant social enterprise based in the Southside of Glasgow with a
mission to share the joys of language learning far and wide. We offer engaging,
light-hearted and interactive language classes to older adults in various locations across
Scotland. All of what we do is inspired by research which shows that learning a language
at any age can help slow cognitive decline. We believe wholeheartedly that it is never too
late to learn!
For our latest project, we are partnering with Glasgow City Council to teach Scottish
Gaelic in day centres and care homes in Scotland. We are looking for individuals with
Gaelic language skills to help with the various stages of this exciting new project!
We are initially looking for individuals with interest in translation and/or tutoring to
translate our pre-existing workbooks into Gaelic. This work would be done remotely, and
would require applicants to have access to emails. A personal computer is desirable but
not essential, as we would be able to provide a computer on loan. The translating role has
a time commitment of around 1 hour a week over a 2 month period. Experience of
translation work is not essential, and volunteers will be supported throughout by Lingo
Flamingo's Learning Manager.
As part of the second stage of the project, we are looking for people to teach small groups
of adults using the newly designed workbooks. Teaching experience is helpful, but not
essential, as we will provide comprehensive online teacher training. The tutoring time will
require a time commitment of 1-2 hours per week, but with lots of flexibility according to
your needs.
Individuals are welcome to help with both roles outlined above, or whichever best suits
their interests. We will provide training on our teaching methods and practices, as well as
ongoing support and mentoring for both roles.

Democracy Volunteers is the UK's leading election observation group. We observe elections to assess the quality of them and to report back to returning officers, the UK's Electoral Commission and to government. We do this by a combination of interview with key election officials as well as in-person observations of elections, such as attending polling stations and the counting process.
On May 6th, 2021 we will be deploying around 200 observers, accredited by the Electoral Commission, to observe the devolved parliamentary election in Scotland and other electoral events across the UK.
The day will consist of travelling around your designated area (this will be within the city’s wider area) and visiting polling stations with a partner, in order to help us collect data on a wide variety of subjects. Don’t worry: This will all be explained in depth through online training and seminars in addition to other events such as a pre-deployment event taking place in the week prior to polling day. Election observation is a great way to learn more about the democratic process in action, learn more about electoral standards in the UK and contribute to civil society!
Key things to consider before applying are:
• You must be available all day from 6:45am until 10:15pm on the May 6th 2021. The day is very long and tiring, but enjoyable and rewarding!
• You must be polite and respectful to all officials and the public throughout the day in line with our code of conduct.
• Have a positive mental attitude.
• Be able to follow the training provided and accurately record data.
• Be available for a training and deployment session in your area scheduled to take place in the week prior to the election (More details will be given nearer the deployment)
Please note that this role is apolitical and as such we are not able to consider any volunteering candidate if they are a member of a political party or are actively campaigning for any candidate at these elections.
Expenses are covered for travel and subsistence on polling day and for counting. Full training is conducted online and we will be holding a series of online events to tell potential observers more about the process.
Application is by CV. Once processed we will be in touch with all applicants within 10 working days informing you whether we intend to proceed with your application. More information can be found about Democracy Volunteers at www.democracyvolunteers.org
(All observers will be equipped for elections based on the health limitations in place at the time and be registered by Democracy Volunteers with the UK's Electoral Commission).
